District News:
Salary Movement:
September 1st is the deadline to submit paperwork for salary movement for the 2019-20 school year. September 1st is a Sunday so please plan accordingly to have your paperwork submitted by Friday, August 31st to Kathy Dreier.  If you have any questions please call Kathy at 341-2329.

Technology Update: 
Over the summer the Technology department has made updates to several of the entrances.  There is a small chance that in the transition your key fob may not work. Please send a work order to
[email protected] so that it may be taken care of.

Earn $250 by referring a new bus driver:
Emporia Public Schools needs bus drivers for the 2019-20 school year.  This is a perfect opportunity for someone who may be retired, want flexibility in their schedule, or who has school days off.   USD 253 employees can earn a $250 referral bonus when new bus drivers include the district employee's name on their employment application.  The $250 referral bonus will arrive after the driver has been on the job for six months. Additionally, new drivers will receive a $250 bonus on their first paycheck and another $250 bonus once training and CDL endorsement are complete.   For more information contact Amy Larson at 620-341- 2330.

District Events:
USD 253 Bond Vote:
If you are not already registered to vote, the district encourages all employees to become registered so that you may participate in the bond election on September 5th.  Ballots will be mailed on August 16th and need to be returned by noon on September 5th. To ensure you ballot is counted, it is suggested to mail your ballot by August 29th or hand deliver it to the County Clerk's Office.  Envelopes must be signed in order for them to count. 

Enrollment for 2019-20:
Enrollment for the 2019-20 school year continues at the Flint Hills Learning Center thru August 8th.  During this time, families are able to enroll their student/s with assistance from the enrollment staff.  Beginning August 12th enrollment will return to Mary Herbert Education Center so that the Learning Center can prepare for the start of school.
  • Monday - Thursday, August 5th-8th from 7:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m.   in-person only
  • Beginning August 12th, enrollment must be completed at Mary Herbert Education Center, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. in-person and  by appointment
Convocation will be on August 12th:
All staff please mark your calendars and make plans to attend the 2019-2020 Back to School Convocation and Breakfast, August 12, 2019, at 7:30 a.m. located at Emporia High School.  This will be an exciting time that you won't want to miss including a professional keynote speaker, prizes, vendor tables, photo booth, and great food.

The board recognized Riverside Elementary as a Challenge Award recipient. The award recognizes Kansas schools that are making a notable difference in student achievement on Kansas math and reading assessment scores despite facing significant challenges in their school population.

Over fifty new teachers were welcomed by the administrative team at the new staff orientation breakfast on Monday morning at Emporia State University.

K-8 teachers participated in Capturing Kids Hearts training during their new teacher orientation.

  • Memorandum of Understanding between USD 253 and the Emporia Country Club for the Emporia High girls' and boys' golf teams to use the golf course for practice purposes during 2019-20 academic year
  • donation from the Emporia Eagles Lodge, $900 to the Spartan Stop and $900 to the Food for Students program
  • treasurer's report for June 2019 and for Year End FY19
  • grant of $7,600 from the Emporia Community Foundation for an Optoacoustic Emissions Screener for hearing

Board Information:
Vicki Schweinler, Executive Director of Elementary Education introduced members of the Early Learning Facility Task Force committee and thanked them for their participation and commitment in preparing a recommendation for the future of Maynard Early Childhood Center.  Erin Woods and Dr. Dennis Kear, committee members shared information from their committee report and provided the task force recommendation that Emporia Schools build a new early learning facility.   • Kevin Case, Superintendent of Schools, updated the board on the recent Town Hall meeting success and shared information regarding the bond timeline for the next few weeks. Ballots will be mailed out on August 16th and need to be returned by noon on September 5th.
