Lakeland District - Keeping you Up to Date!
Spotlight on Culture in the Community.

The City of Prince Albert's Arts & Cultural Coordinator, Judy MacLeod Campbell, contributed a Blog on the SPRA website, sharing how the City developed a Cultural Diversity and Protocol Policy.

"It is important that as a diverse community, home to many Indigenous groups, that we not ignore the challenges posed by our colonial history and recent arrival of many newcomers. As the original inhabitants of this land and as inhabitants of this land by birth, adoption, or immigration, we all share the goal to make our city a better place to live based on mutual respect, equal opportunity and hope." - Judy MacLeod Campbell

The City of Prince Albert is on Treaty Six Territory and homeland to the Métis and Dakota Nations. We are a beautiful city situated on the North Saskatchewan River, and where prairie meets pine.  Prince Albert is one of the oldest settlements in the province and is rich with history, culture, and a diverse population. We have one the highest Aboriginal population ratios in the country at 42%. Our immigration community continues to grow. Remaining relatively unchanged since 1981, this population has grown by more than 4 times since 2011. We have a range of settlers that came to this area from European countries generations ago and have well established ethnocultural communities including active Ukrainian, German and French societies that work to celebrate their own unique cultures and heritages.

Culture Days September 25 - October 25, 2020
City of Melfort & Melfort Public Library hosted a 'Choose your Family Adventure' on September 26 in Celebration of Culture Days in their community. Participants travelled around the community building and learning of their story, making choices to determine the next chapter.

The City of Prince Albert hosted the 'Culture Days Bingo' which toured participants through all the Culture Days Events within the City of Prince Albert. These events included: Tapastrama, Public Arts Tours, Beading, Screen Printing and much more. The City of Prince Albert also hosted a Window Art Contest with business and residential categories.

In honor of Culture Days 2020 and her Metis heritage, Kate Boyer reads The Owl & the Lemming at the Rosthern Wheatland Library. This story can be enjoyed by children and adults of all ages! The Town of Rosthern also hosted a virtual tour of the Rosthern Museum & Mennonite Interpretive Centre. The building itself has a long history to tell and houses historical artifacts collected by volunteers and donated to the museum pertaining to Rosthern's rich heritage. As well Rosthern celebrated it's Station Arts Centre Art Gallery Re-opening.

Thank you to all of the Lakeland District Communities who celebrated Culture Days in 2020.
