Tu B'Shevat is Coming and Ganon Bet is Blooming with Excitement!
Monday was Rosh Chodesh Shevat, which means that Tu B'Shevat is just around the corner!  We have been learning all about the "birthday of the trees."  While it is still cold in New Jersey, in Eretz Yisrael it is getting warmer and the trees are beginning to blossom. Did you know that the Etz Shekaydiah, the almond tree, with its pink and white buds, is the first to bloom in Eretz Yisrael? We have been working on our own Shekaydiah/family trees.  First we painted a foam base green and glued on grass and flowers.  Next, we painted a brown tree trunk from some recycled paper towel rolls. Finally, we painted a green tree top and glued on white and pink cotton balls for the flower buds. We know that trees are an important part of Hashem's world and we have been discussing how we can take care of the Earth, not just on Tu B'Shevat but every day of the year!

Gan Gimmel Explores the Emotions
Gan Gimmel has been exploring the emotion frustrated. When we feel frustrated, we are unable to play, think and learn - we become stuck. It is important to help our body and mind get back to a calm and relaxed state in order to be a full participant in the classroom community. We began by discussing what makes people frustrated and then divided the emotion into four categories, individual frustration, frustrated when communicating with a peer, frustration when using toys and objects with peers, and frustration during a turn taking game. We then talked about what our bodies look and feel like when experiencing this emotion. This discussion led to the big question of, "how do I manage this feeling?" As a class we created a three step plan: 1) identify the feeling; 2) take a deep breath to relax my body and mind and 3) make a plan. We created a class book with personal examples from each student and then compiled a generic frustration plan for each of the four categories. It is amazing to see how the "frustration plan" has already become part of our classroom language.

KIBO the Robot Bird Migrates With 1A
The budding engineers of 1A are integrating their bird study and the KIBO Robotics program. KIBO became a bird in flight and the students programmed KIBO to migrate to a warmer climate.  The students had an engaging session using KIBO's light sensor (eye) and the new parameter "until dark". Shining a light on KIBO's light sensor kept bird KIBO flying down the road, covering KIBO's light sensor created dark and made KIBO end the journey.  The collaboration and high level planning and problem solving skills are evident throughout this process. The room is charged with the students working together to learn the new program and combine it with previous knowledge. We always end with a Technology Circle in which the children beautifully express their learning process and problems they solved. Each student has been writing about every lesson in their Engineering Design Journal. We feel very lucky to have such a challenging, exciting program in our class.

Yavneh Academy Debate Team
On Wednesday, January 29th, Yavneh Academy's Debate Team attended their second official debate at Barkai Yeshivah in Brooklyn, NY and competed against Barkai Yeshivah, Yeshivat Noam, and Westchester Day School.  The Yavneh students who participated in the debate were eighth graders Jonah Danzer, Sophia Esses, Ari Lewis, Avi Sebrow, and seventh graders Keira Cohen, Daniel Lechter, Elad Shushan, and Mussia Poltorak, as well as seventh grader Julie Saadatmand who attended as an observer for her future debate.  The topic of the debate was, Standardized Testing Should Not be a Major Component of the College Admissions Process.   It was a challenging argument in which to debate both on the affirmative side as well as the negative position.  Fortunately, Yavneh Academy returned as winners in two categories. Sophia Esses and Avi Sebrow won first place as Best Team and Avi Sebrow won as Best Speaker.  Yavneh Academy is extremely proud of our team and is looking forward to cheering them on in the next debate.

Seventh Grade Romeo and Juliet Workshop
On Wednesday our 7th grade English classes were joined by a group of Shakespearean actors for the start of a 5 day workshop. The students are beginning to read Romeo and Juliet , and these workshops will offer them a chance to see Shakespeare's work through the eyes of the actors who bring it to life. The focus of Day 1 was "intention" and how actors can communicate so much not just through the words they say but the way they say it. Students created gestures that represented themselves and explored how they could make one sound express many different meanings by playing with the intention. In the coming days, we will continue to experience firsthand the art of acting and the exercises actors perform to prepare for a play. Students will also have the opportunity to do some acting of their own and to see some scenes performed by our talented guests.
