Next month, voting members will convene Aug. 5-10 for the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee. This will be the 15th gathering of the assembly, the primary decision-making body of the ELCA. This year’s theme is “We are church,” and voting members will spend the week participating in plenaries, discussions, Bible studies and worship while deliberating the work of the church.
This year, voting members will:

  • Elect the presiding bishop and secretary. Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, elected in 2013, is seeking re-election to a six-year term. Secretary Chris Boerger, elected in 2013, is retiring after this term. The secretary is elected to a six-year term.

  • Vote on proposed budgets for the 2020, 2021 and 2022 fiscal years.

  • Review proposed amendments to the “Constitution, Bylaws and Continuing Resolutions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.”

  • Consider a proposal that the entrance rite for ministers of Word and Service be ordination and to no longer count deacons as laypeople for the representational principles.

  • Act on responses to memorials from synod assemblies.

On Aug. 6, voting members will participate in hearings to ask questions and learn more about some ministries of the church and the proposed actions that will come before them.
In her introductory letter to assembly participants, Eaton reminded voting members that the assembly is “a process of communal spiritual discernment to bring about God’s will for God’s people.”

Also taking place during the assembly will be a celebration for “Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA,” a program to honor the 50th anniversary of women’s ordination, and an observance of the church’s focus on gun violence awareness.

We had hot dogs for lunch the other day. Not fancy brats. Just regular old hot dogs and buns. I wanted mine boiled because that’s how they’re meant to be eaten. She wanted hers browned in a skillet, for the same reason. I had mine with ketchup, because that’s how they’re meant to be eaten. She insists that mustard is the right condiment. She ate hers without a bun, while I did it the way they’re meant to be eaten. We both enjoyed our lunch, but here’s the question: should I post something on facebook telling the world how wrong she was with the way she ate her hot dog? Shall I post pictures of the right way to do it? Shall I loudly and frequently praise any people who opt for what I happen to know is the right and best (and therefore) only way to eat a hot dog? And shall I criticize those “other” people? If you’re a bun-less, mustardy browned hot dog person, can we ever be friends?

Sure, there’s some humor there. But if you ignore the hot dog part, might you still see yourself and how you differ from folks around you. And not just differ, because that’s ok. But differ with an angry and hateful attitude that includes words like stupid and unreasonable and traitorous and heretical and un-something or un-everything. Pick the issue. There are tons of them today and lots of people who insist on taking sides and lashing out at anyone who sees things from a different perspective. But do we have to have an angry discussion about everything in life? And what would it take for those hateful confrontations to be done away with? And are you really sure that mustard is better than ketchup?

In this confrontational world of ours, change has to begin with you and me. Yes, there’s a lot that separates us but there’s so much that binds us together—and the knowledge that we are all loved children of God is nothing to disregard. So if you and I and our neighbors in church and at the ballot box, our friends on the golf course or in the book club, can start all our interactions with a kind of “what would Jesus do” mentality, who knows what our world and our nation and our church and our families will start to look like—again. Imagine the change that can happen when you and I start talking about hot dogs and move into a discussion of how all the people of God can live together.

Pastor Linn will be away on Military Duty August 8-20.
