February is Love Your Pet Month
Council Member Cisneros invites you to be part of her annual Love Your Pet initiative, a project which includes a series of events and opportunities during the month of February in conjunction with the annual, international World Spay Month. Neighborhood Cleanup
This Saturday at 9:30 am, your neighbors in the First Ward will meet at Spring St. Beer & Wine Garden for a neighborhood cleanup, free breakfast tacos, and coffee.

I-45 Workshops Coming Up
Based on community input collected last Fall by the City's Technical Team and the City's Planning Department, 3 workshops are scheduled to review possible alternative solutions to TXDOT's I-45 project. Come review the ideas that were generated and verify that the alternative proposals accurately reflect your input.  Read Council Member Cisneros' comments to TxDOT here.

Maritime Art Science Tech (MAST) Contest
As a team, perform research and create an art project focused on the environmental crisis caused by waste in the ocean. Finalists will be invited to present their artworks and table displays. Register to enter the contest by 2/15/20. More info here.

Historic Bill Signed Into Law
The Historic Emancipation Trail Act of 2019 bill passed the House and Senate and was signed by the President on 1/27/20. More info here on the bill and how it will benefit Independence Heights.

1119 Commerce Street Advisory
As part of the ongoing process for the future demolition of 1119 Commerce Street, the Harris County Flood Control has contracted with an environmental services firm specializing in abatement to remove asbestos present in the building. This is not the beginning of demolition, but individuals in the area may encounter trucks/heavy machinery. More info here .

Hurricane Harvey funding is available. APPLY NOW by visiting this website or visiting an intake center location near you. Project Recovery Harvey is open to homeowners affected by Harvey or depending on the program, the floods of 2015, 2016, & 2017 who are US Citizens and Permanent Legal Residents.
