In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies invites you to Rhode Island College to attend several events highlighting the Lusophone diaspora.
 
CABO VERDE NATIONAL DAY OF CULTURE / BRAVA

IPLWS is proud to co-sponsor this event as part of RIC's Diversity Week schedule.

This event mirrors the activity of the Ministry of Culture of Cabo Verde in celebrating the culture and identity of the Island of Brava. The history of Cabo Verde/Brava and its cultural influences are conveyed through narrative, music and song, with awards and live entertainment featured throughout the afternoon. 

This event is ticketed: $20 for the general public; $10 for non-RIC students; no charge for students with RIC ID.

FLORA GOMES: Film Director from Guinea-Bissau

Flora Gomes, one of the most emblematic contemporary film directors, will visit a Portuguese Studies class to discuss his cinema and the culture of Guinea-Bissau with RIC students. Films such as Mortu Nega (1988), Udju Azul di Yonta (1992), Nha Fala (2002) and his most recent film, Republica di mininos (2013) will be discussed.

Azorean author, Joel Neto, will be presenting at Rhode Island College as part of his tour of the Luso-American community of Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Author of the novel "Arquipélago", winner of the Prémio Literário Fernando Namora 2015, and the journal, "A vida no campo", he has been praised as "....one of the great contemporary Portuguese writers. " JULIO MAGALHÃES (Porto Canal)
