A Letter From Your President, Cupid Alexander
|

Greetings Housers,
As we are pressing toward a successful October, I want to be sure that I first of all thank you for your commitment to the work. Many of you have taken on a heightened load- working on solutions for your communities, advocating for the necessary resources for your housing authority, volunteering with likeminded neighbors and friends and taking care of yourself and your family. Your hard work is noticed, needed, and definitely appreciated.
As we are an A-political organization, that advocates for EVERYONE in need of housing, I will not give any political leanings, but will say this: please utilize your right to vote. Our industry needs the resources, both locally and nationally, and we know that voting heavily guides the outcomes the lead to the solutions we work with and for. Again- just vote 😊.
As usual- stay healthy, and stay safe.
Cupid S. Alexander

In 2007, Housing America was created and October was designated as the annual month for NAHRO and its members to collectively raise awareness of the need for, and the importance of, safe, decent and affordable housing in quality communities. Events are held around the country by housing authorities, redevelopment agencies and government entities to spotlight the great works that have been done and the successes that so many residents have experienced. Sadly, there continues to be an unmet housing need for many of America's most vulnerable.

HOUSING AMERICA REGIONAL COMPETITION!!
|
|
Which region will be the most involved in Housing America Month? Compete for national recognition, a special prize, and – most importantly – bragging rights!
How to Compete
-
Get involved in Housing America Month! Have your agencies post on social media, send advocacy letters, promote Housing America Month in your email signatures, on your websites, in your newsletters, and more! Events don’t have to be new or specific to Housing America Month. We want to celebrate affordable housing, which includes lifting up the work that you do every day – maintaining units, providing services for your residents, and more. National NAHRO will take all these entries and amplify them on our social media accounts (check out our Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn), on our website, in the NAHRO Monitor, and more.
-
Let us know what you’re doing! While we can see your social media posts if you tag us, we may not see everything you do. Email comms@nahro.org and tell us about your event so we can update your score!

Sounders FC, Seahawks, Seattle Storm, Seattle Mariners, OL Reign, and Seattle Kraken, have come together with Seattle Unite in a campaign called the Democracy Cup to encourage all of us to complete the Census, register to vote, and vote.
You have until Oct. 31 to complete the Census and be counted. It's important to participate in the 2020 Census which will determine funding our state and community receives, including emergency aid, housing assistance, health care, job programs and more. The federal government distributes more than $1.5 trillion in federal spending, and the results of the Census determine how much funding each state receives. The Census also determines the number of representatives Washington state has in the House of Representatives.
The 2020 Census is an effort to count everyone in the country. The Census is conducted every 10 years, so it's important that you are counted. The Census is a short questionnaire available in multiple languages that asks basic information about your household and the people who live in it. It takes less than ten minutes to answer the questionnaire. There are three ways to respond to the Census, either online, by mail or phone. Read More

Fire Devastation in Jackson County
|
|
The wildfires in our region have impacted many communities and here in Jackson County, the affects have been especially devastating. Jackson County lost over 2,300 homes; a large portion of those being older manufactured homes occupied by lower income households. The Housing Authority of Jackson County lost a 36-unit farm labor property as well.
The loss of 2,300 homes in any community would be difficult, and in Jackson County where the vacancy rate has hovered at 2% for the past several years, families who have lost their home are finding themselves with limited options in finding replacement housing. Rents have risen sharply as a result of the low vacancy rate and many lower income families and seniors cannot afford current rents without assistance.
In order to help mitigate some of the impact, the Housing Authority is placing a preference on all of its agency owned units for victims of natural disasters. We are also participating in several work groups related to emergency placement, outreach to families impacted by the fires, and rebuilding efforts that will attempt to replace the affordable housing that was lost.
It will take years for our community to put the pieces back together and rebuild. The bright spot in all the rubble has been the response of our community coming together to problem solve, think outside the box, and pull together to provide shelter, assistance, and support to those who lost everything. It will take creativity, teamwork and diligence to get through this and the residents of Jackson County have taken this challenge on in a way that celebrates what community is all about.
