President's Message

May was a busy and successful month for ADAO!

Tragically, since the EPA's asbestos ban was overturned in 1991, over one million Americans have died from preventable asbestos-caused diseases.

Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) staff risked their jobs by voicing concerns to ADAO about the lack of proper EPA asbestos regulations. In the New York Times article "EPA Leaders Disregarded Agency's Experts in Issuing Asbestos Rule, Memos Show," it becomes clear that EPA ignored internal emails from their own scientists and lawyers citing their concerns with EPA's incomplete asbestos risk evaluation and failure to implement TSCA reform.

On the same day the Times released the article, ADAO testified before the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change the hearing titled "Ban Asbestos Now: Taking Action To Save Lives And Livelihoods." This legislative hearing was a landmark step forward, as this was the first time the House held a hearing about a bill to ban asbestos. Support for the bicameral Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act (ARBAN) is strong and growing. There are now over 50 bipartisan cosponsors,   Click here to read details about the hearing!

As the hearing reinforced, a federal ban on asbestos is the only way to prevent asbestos exposure in order to eradicate asbestos-caused diseases. ARBAN is made to do just that. In our latest blog, Top Facts about Asbestos and the Bicameral Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act (ARBAN) , you can read updates on what exactly our bill intends to do, and why it is so important and will save lives. State bills that allow for continued imports and use of raw asbestos are dangerously flawed and are not a true ban.

Just a few short weeks after the hearing, ADAO had follow up meetings with members of Congress and EPA Assistant Administrator Alexandra Dunn regarding the bipartisan concern voiced at the legislative hearing. During our meeting with Asst. Administrator Dunn, we hand delivered a letter signed by 26 of the leading experts and scientists regarding the EPA's narrow and limited risk evaluation policies. In the letter, the expert community makes clear that a full asbestos risk evaluation is critical to protecting public health.

Art, Advocacy, and Academia remains a strong point for ADAO. We have released a new video PSA, "What the Merchants of Death Won't Tell You: The Irrefutable Facts about Asbestos" which will help increase asbestos awareness worldwide!

Get ready to mark those calendars for the 2019 Miles for Meso fundraiser , taking place in Alton, IL on Saturday, September 28, 2019. It brings nearly 1,000 racers and volunteers together to raise asbestos and mesothelioma awareness, and to raise funds to support ADAO.

Let's continue our fight to ban asbestos and save lives!
