WOW (Women of Wonder) Evolution
Group Art Exhibit - Artist Reception
Women of Wonder (WOW) is proud to exhibit a sample of their quilts, paintings, beadwork, journals, surface design and knitted objects at the Norman Williams Public Library.  Since they shared a local quilting class ten years ago by quilt artist Dianne Hire of Maine, WOW has met monthly to share projects, feedback and support. In those ten years of camaraderie, members have been on a creative journey, occasionally exhibiting their work in quilts and other media. Show runs August 15  - September 30.   [picture is "Layers" by Michelle Goldsmith]   (more info...)

Now through August 14
Photography of Joanna Garbisch
Photographer Joanna Garbisch's interest in photography started in college when she was handed a Polaroid Camera for an art class. On graduating, she went to work for Polaroid's color lab in Cambridge, MA. In the early '60s, Dr. Land switched his attention from black and white to color, so in the lab Joanna and colleagues made the developer, positive and negative film from dyes and chemicals supplied by chemists. Within a year she was sent out to test the film in the real world and she never looked back.  Over the years she has traveled and seen the world through the lens.

From the Executive Director...

There has been a lot going on at the library! This summer has seen a continuation of the knitting group and the bridge group both of which meet weekly on the mezzanine - frequently being entertained by Sonny Saul's piano playing. Qigong has continued on Saturday mornings as well. Interplay did their monthly jazz jam session in June on the mezzanine and Dartmouth jazz professor, Fred Haas, gave a wonderful talk on "How to Listen to Jazz".

As a follow up to her seed saving lecture in May at NWPL, Sylvia Davatz gave tours of her seed saving garden. In Early July our gallery had an art opening of photography, "Feathers, Fur, and Faces", which continues to be there until August 14th. Now that we are open on Tuesday evenings, we have begun to have evening programming during the week. Our first Tuesday evening program was with Ham Gillett who spoke about the new recycling laws and "How to Get Rid of Your Stuff" and our second was about essential oils. On July 20th author Janet Benton spoke on her book Lilli de Jong. The last weekend of July we were honored to have many Bookstock events here at the library.

August brought the Lion King preview by BarnArts kids and a songwriting workshop and performance by Sandi Anderson. As part of Margaret Edwards' popular memoir writing Learning Lab class, memoirist George Hano was honored and his memoirs were read in part by other class participants. Cribbage is a new weekly game played in the "Room of Requirement."

Next week is a busy one: Wednesday evening we will have a composting workshop with Cat Buxton at NWPL which is co-sponsored by Sustainable Woodstock and The North Chapel and next Friday we have the opening of a new group art exhibit. Sustainable Woodstock will also be doing their "Green Drinks" on the library lawn Thursday. Looking ahead to fall, in September Tim Traver will read from his new book about the Driftless region and a wellness afternoon is in the works on the mezzanine. Classic book discussions will be starting up again along with Learning Lab fall classes.

For more information about joining the library's weekly book, knitting, bridge or cribbage groups or to find out how to register for the fall Learning Lab sessions please visit our website or contact the library executive director, Amanda Merk: [email protected]
