This week I am thrilled to announce that NWPL has been loaned a one-of-a-kind, large-scale Revolutionary War chess set! The colonialist side is represented by blue chess pieces with George and Martha Washington serving as our "King" and "Queen" pieces. The British side has "Red Coats." Bill Yates, a former 5th grade teacher from South Pomfret, graciously arranged . . .      (more . . . )

If Memory Serves -   Art Exhibit
Lynda Knisley's years as an Art Educator to learners of every age have resulted in a definition of art-making that is flexible and broad. The intersection of unconventional materials and her responses to Vermont barns and vintage protraits yield "reminders of people and places we know, if only by imagination where clock time cannot intrude."
We find fewer noble barn structures in our landscape and fewer vintage fashion statements packed in attic trunks. To honor them, fragments of text, rusty oddments, and "found materials" make each assemblage unique in availability and style.  Lynda shows watercolors, collages, and pastels

Classics Book Discussion: The Idiot
by Fyodor Dostoevsky

The Idiot  is considered one of Dostoevskty's greatest works, although not as popular as Crime and Punishment or the Brothers Karamazov. It is said to be his most autobiographical work --Dostoevsky, like his hero, was an epileptic. The book was written in 1867-69 while he was abroad after fleeing from his creditors in Russia.
The title is an ironic reference to the hero, Prince Myshkin, whose goodness and simplicity lead some people to think he is stupid. Myshkin is sort of a Russian Christ figure, who embodies the values Dostoevsky cherished - altruism, meekness, kindness and love.
