129th Columbus Commemoration
offers new heritage festival
|
|
There may not have been the traditional street parade as in the past 128 Christopher Columbus celebrations within Baltimore's Italian community, yet October 6th still offered pageantry and honor to Columbus Day as a solid crowd gathered in Columbus Piazza in Little Italy for a commemoration and wreath-laying ceremony. Italian-related organizations such as
Appian Society, Society of Italian American Businessmen
,
American Citizens for Italian Matters, Promotion Center for Little Italy,
plus eight
Sons of Italy Lodges
from
around Maryland, each laid a wreath at the base of the statue.
Afterward,
Archbishop Curley High School's
lively marching band led a procession of city officials, civic leaders, organizations' members, and spectators, along Eastern Avenue into the heart of Little Italy to kick off the first
Italian Heritage Festival
along Stiles & Exeter Streets which drew over 1,300 attendees.

Associated Italian American Charities of Maryland
(AIAC) was very much involved.

"We are very happy with the turnout and the event," said Pica. "We have received many compliments from a diverse group of people. This was clearly a collective effort."

BUON COMPLEANNO, HELEN!
The Mugavero family celebrated their Aunt Helen's 100th birthday October 5th at the Little Italy Lodge with approximately 100 family and friends in attendance.
Helen Mugavero Motto
was born 1919 on Fawn Street in Little Italy, grew up in the neighborhood, and married Sam Motto. She was employed by Lever Brothers. Helen is a sister to the neighborhood icon,
Marion "Mugs" Mugavero
, who owned and operated the original
Fawn Confectionery
at the corner of Fawn & Exeter for close to seven decades.

, Helen's niece and Mugs' daughter. "Aunt Helen couldn’t stop dancing to the Monaldi band ... so much fun!!! Thanks to all who attended!"
Helen and Marion, along with seven other siblings, were born to Sicilian immigrant parents who raised their family in the same house where they operated a neighborhood bakery. "They had big ovens," said Gayle, "and would sell bread directly out of the house. To my knowledge, the bakery never had a name." Helen is the last living sibling of the nine Mugaveros.

An interesting display at the October 6th Italian Heritage Festival was an information booth hosted by the Fire Museum of Maryland regarding the 1956 "Tommy," Baltimore City's first diesel-powered fireboat, and the most powerful one the city ever owned at 12,000 gallons of water per minute. The Tommy was named after the sitting mayor at the time, Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr. of Little Italy. Serving the city faithfully until 2007, the fireboat was decommissioned and eventually sold for scrap. However, a significant portion of the boat was saved and now sits at Sparrows Point.
The Fire Museum in Lutherville is campaigning to raise revenue and bring the boat to the museum where it can live again. Preserved and interpreted for the public, the plan is to allow water to once again flow from Tommy's deck guns. As such an important part of Baltimore City and the Italian community's history, the museum staff is determined for the boat deserves to be brought back to life for the public to enjoy in a permanent display.
