Pauma/Valley Insurance Agency, Inc.
"Valley Center's Most Trusted Independent Insurance Agency Since 1978"

January 25, 2020

ON A PERSONAL NOTE...
Brandon Strausbaugh, PVI Manager

January, inherently, can be a month of mixed feelings - from the highs of a new year with all its implied promises to have a fresh start on many things - to the lows of signaling the end to certain things the way we like them and want them to stay.

This January is no different for me in that respect, except that the high was exceptionally high (celebrating mine and Justina's one-year anniversary) to the indescribable low of losing one of our own.

I'm sure most of you know by now that Brooke Dunn, who has been such an important member of the PVI family for 15 years, lost her husband of 20 years, Mitch, when he passed suddenly on January 17th. Of course that means their sons lost their father, and the Dunn family lost a beloved son and brother.

Nothing really prepares you for the loss of a loved one, and no one can take away the pain. But what we can do is show our love and support during the difficult times. I am so proud (but not surprised) of our PVI team in rallying around Brooke and her family! Also, I am proud of how our community has responded as well. One of my favorite things about our hometown is how we come together in time of need, and I so appreciate the outpouring of love and support that has been shown. We definitely take care of our own! To that end, you will note there are a couple of opportunities listed in this newsletter for those who wish to donate to the Dunn family. Thank you all!

Understandably, Brooke will be taking some time off as she and her family grieve, process, heal, and adjust to this new and unplanned reality, and I hope you'll continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they move forward.

We know that all of us will face challenges and blessings, successes and failures as we start this new year and the beginning of a new decade. Through it all, PVI is here for you. We look forward to celebrating the good things with you, and we're here to help and support when needed. Above all, we wish you all the best in the coming year!

"COMMUNITY" WAS HOT TOPIC AT JANUARY CAN MEETING
CHP Officer Mark Latulippe explaining the new lane markings in Valley Center.

"Community" was an underlying theme of CHP Officer Mark Latulippe's remarks as the guest speaker at the January 23rd C AN (Community Action Network) Meeting, and was reiterated by others as well. Officer Latulippe's presentation (to a full house) was extremely informative as he shared new laws for 2020, as well as issues specifically related to Valley Center and our surrounding communities. He also reminded us that "everything is a choice" and to choose wisely, in particular when it comes to driving.

To view two brief videos from Officer Latulippe's presentation, please click here.

This was one of our most informative CAN meetings ever, thanks in large part to Officer Latulippe, but also to the many other presenters who provided their monthly updates!

Following Officer Latulippe's presentation and a brief Q & A, we heard brief presentations/updates from our First Responders and other local representatives. Thank you to all for your excellent presentations!

Those presenting included:

Lt. Pat Shannon , VC Sheriff's Substation
Joe Napier, VC Fire Chief
Jim Davidson, (new) VC Fire Marshal
Rick Johnson, CAL Fire/Deer Springs
Tom Stinson, Assemblymember Marie Waldron's office
Robert Roque, Sen. Brian Jones' office
Darcy LaHaye, VC Parks & Rec
Eric Jockinsen, VC Building Committee/Miss Valley Center Pageant
Marquita Sanchez, VC Library
Larry McKenzie, VC Community Aid Group
Marian Walters, VC Chamber of Commerce
Alan Kirkpatrick, Sheriff's Senior Volunteer Patrol
Stuart Holthaus, A-1 Irrigation

We also had representatives from other agencies that were available for questions.

As usual, the meeting got off to a great start, thanks to the  delicious light breakfast from  Julie Stroh - B Stroh Events and Catering !

There is just so much good stuff  at one time and in one place, you don't want to miss these meetingsThat's why the CAN meeting is...

"Your Monthly Community Connection"

And why PVI is pleased to sponsor them!

Thank you to all who came and participated, in particular our guest speaker, CHP Officer Mark Latulippe!

Also, thanks again to Valley Center Fitness  for being our Door Prize Sponsor! (Please see related story below.)

Congratulations to door prize winner Darlene Hansen, who won one of the Valley Center Fitness gift certificates!

Presenting the certificates was PVI's Brandon Strausbaugh.

Congratulations to our second door prize winner, Bill Palmer!

An interesting note on Mr. Palmer - he was the first VC Fire Chief, served on the VC Fire Board, and now serves as a volunteer in the department. We thank him for his many years of volunteer service to our community!

Mark your calendar now for the February 20th meeting when Lt. Dave Schaller with the San Diego Sheriff's Office will be our guest speaker! See you there!

POUR OUT YOUR LOVE FOR THE DUNN FAMILY!
(Shown kicking off the "Pour Out Your Love" campaign are
PVI's Phyllis Knight and Tanner Walker, with Hill Top Winery.)

A toast... To Hill Top Winery  for "pairing" with PVI to support the  Valley Center Community Aid Group  through our second annual "Pour Out Your Love" fundraising campaign and raffle!

For the second year in a row, Hill Top Winery generously donated two $50 gift certificates and two bottles of their outstanding wine to be raffled off at the end of February. (One gift certificate and one bottle of wi ne = one prize, so you have two separate chances to win!)

Please note that we have designated the Dunn family as the recipient of this year's raffle.

In addition, PVI is pleased to match the total proceeds of the raffle, so even if you don't win, you're still a winner for supporting such a worthy cause!

Raffle tickets are available at the PVI office (located at 27357 Valley Center Rd) during normal business hours.

Tickets are:

$1 = one ticket         $5 = six tickets         $10 = fifteen tickets

The drawing will be held on February 28th, and you don't need to be present to win.

So join us in "another round" and be the "toast of the town" by getting your tickets soon to support the Dunn family!

Cheers to all for your support! Hear, hear!

"IT'S A JAZZY JANUARY..."
FOR  PVI'S SIGNATURE DRINK OF THE MONTH!

"If you've got the winter blues...don't let it get you down,
Come on over to Spins...the happenin' place in town.
Try our Jazzy January Java...sponsored by PVI,
Share a free one with a friend...and you'll kiss the blues good-bye..."

From the smiles on the faces in this picture, you can tell the only "blues" happening are the colors, thanks to Ted Hackleman's jazzy renditions of our PVI Signature Drink of the Month for January.

We won't tell you what's in this month's drink - you'll have to check out Ted's video to see what's so jazzy about this java! But we will tell you that it will be a jazz festival for your taste buds, and you can have it served hot or cold, depending on your moody blues.

We also will tell you that PVI is pleased to offer our BOGO (buy one, get one free) on these drinks, and that's no jazz!

Ted also decided to add a WOGO (watch one video, get another free) so check out both of his "It's a Jazzy January" videos below! Then head on over to Spins Coffee Truck next week and treat a friend or coworker to a free drink, compliments of PVI! You might even get serenaded by Ted (air guitar and all) like PVI's Phyllis Knight and Diane Wick in the photo above.

But hurry in, since this offer is only good through January 31st! So stop by Spins Coffee Truck next week, for a very special treat, and chase those blues away! (And all that jazz...)

(One Free Drink Offer per person/per day.)

Spins Coffee Truck is parked at 27932 Valley Center Road (across from Fat Ivor's / Powerland Equipment), Monday - Friday, 6 am - 2 pm.
THE MAKING OF MAGICAL MOMENTS AND MEMORIES

It's not every day that you have the opportunity to play dress up for the evening and hobnob with Hollywood, but when you do, you definitely have to make the most of it!

And that's exactly what Brandon and Justina Strausbaugh did when they were guests of The Hartford for AARP's "Movies for Grownups Awards" on Saturday evening, January 11th!

To be a part of this special event, Brandon and Justina were nominated by their marketing rep, and wound up being one of four agents (agencies) who qualified to attend.

In addition to attending the awards program, they also received a complimentary stay at The Beverly Hills Wilshire (which fans of the movie "Pretty Woman" will recognize), where the event was held. (The fact that "Pretty Woman" is one of Justina's favorite movies, was icing on the cake!)

Before the awards show started, Brandon and Justina had the opportunity to watch as the stars came down the red carpet, and then joined them with a perfectly situated table to catch all the fun action of the evening. As you can see, a few photo ops were a nice surprise as well!

Needless to say, Brandon and Justina had "an absolute blast" and were so thankful to have been selected to be a part of this special evening.

Following this whirlwind weekend, that seemed more like a fairy tale, it was back to business-as-usual for Brandon and Justina, but, oh, what memories were made!

Of course, their family and friends know that Brandon and Justina are stars in their own right and are living their own happily ever after...

A SEASON OF REASONS TO CELEBRATE

They also were celebrating their one-year anniversary!

Happy Anniversary, Brandon and Justina, from all your PVI family and friends!

Here's to many, many more!

Cheers!

When we get to highlight the beautiful and special area in which we live, well, that's just the gift that keeps on giving!
