Maternal Stress May Harm Babies' Brains
Source:  Psych Central]

New research has found that severe maternal stress, anxiety and depression may be associated with impairment in key fetal brain regions before birth. Researchers from the Children's National Hospital discovered the link in women who knew their unborn fetus has a congenital heart disease.

While additional research is needed, the Children's National Hospital study authors say their unprecedented findings underscore the need for universal screening for psychological distress as a routine part of prenatal care. Moreover, they highly recommend taking additional steps to support stressed-out pregnant women and safeguard their newborns' developing brains.

Young Children Prefer to Learn From Confident People
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

At a time when scams seem all around us and fake news appears to be on the rise, you might be relieved to know that even young children show some impressive skills when it comes to identifying poor sources of information, suggests new research from the University of British Columbia.

In a new study published today in the PLOS ONE, researchers found that young children between the age of four and five not only prefer to learn from people who appear confident, they also keep track of how well the person's confidence has matched with their

The rate of survival of very preterm babies in Canada increased 25% after the national Evidence-based Practice for Improving Quality (EPIQ) program was introduced in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) across the country, according to new research in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

The EPIQ program was introduced in 2003 by the Canadian Neonatal Network in 25 neonatal units to improve outcomes for premature babies. The study, originating from Sinai Health in Toronto, analyzed the effect of changes in care practices on outcomes for 50 831 infants born prematurely between

[Source:  Science Daily]

New research has discovered that Down's syndrome, Fragile X syndrome and Williams syndrome are all linked to sleep disruption in very young children, and that sleep plays a crucial role in the development of these children's language skills.

Led by Dr Dean D'Souza of Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) and published in the journal Research in Developmental Disabilities, it is the first cross-syndrome study to examine sleep, and the relationship between sleep and language, in very young children with these neurodevelopmental disorders.

Valentine's Day Literacy Activity - Playdoh Heart Stamping
[Source: No Time for Flash Cards]

Incorporating Valentine's Day is a fun way to make skill building more fun. This activity as we did it is for children familiar with letters and interested in how things are spelled. This is a stage some children enter into very young, like 3-4 or not until later like 6. That is why this is a great free choice activity, and I have a wonderful way to differentiate it for preschool as well. You can also use sight words if you are working on them. We just had fun duplicating the sayings on conversation hearts but feel free to adapt this to your specific learner's needs.

Valentines Bug for Speech and Fine Motor Practice
This idea is inspired by Pinterest and altered for speech and language goals and therapy by the folks at the 'Word Nerd Speech Teach' blog. ( wordnerdspeechteach.blogspot.com)

Start by cutting out paper hearts in several colors. Print and cut out pictures of each student's target sounds & glue the pictures to the hearts.

Add a head, antennae, legs, and googly eyes and you've got an awesome Valentine's Day bug! (Challenge your students to make their bug really long for lots of practice!). OTs can modify this fine motor craft for emotions work and more!

SpEd Corner:  Are Schools Doing Enough To Prepare Students For Life After?
[Source: Disability Scoop]

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Kate Lord didn't have a plan when she graduated from Brunswick High School in 2014. For two years, she was unemployed. Eventually, her father was able to use his connections at Bowdoin College to get her a job working in a kitchen. For 20 hours a week, she lines muffin pans and preps dessert trays.

At this time, the bakery job suffices. Kate is a hard worker and a pleasure to be around, her supervisor said. But she has no interest in the food industry. Her father believes she could do a lot more, and wishes her high school had done more to help her visualize her future and then take steps to reach her goals.

Welcome to part one of four in my series on the best toys for speech and language development!

[Source:  Heckman Equation.org]

This paper estimates the large array of long-run benefits of an influential early childhood program targeted to disadvantaged children and their families. It is evaluated by random assignment and follows participants through their mid-30s. The program is a prototype for numerous interventions currently in place around the world. It has substantial beneficial impacts on (a) health and the quality of life, (b) the labor incomes of participants, (c) crime, (d) education, and (e) the labor income of the mothers of the participants through subsidizing their childcare. There are substantially greater monetized benefits for males. The overall rate of return is a statistically significant 13.0% per annum
