Hello Daves Avenue Families,
Today we celebrate 100 days of school! During your dinnertime conversation this evening, consider prompting your child to share their successes so far this year. Successes include academic gains as well growth in executive functioning which can include getting dressed and packing lunches and/or backpacks independently and arriving to school on time. These first grade boys, Grey Gardner, Ryan Berris, Cerick Khetani, and Jordan Mayder wore their 100 day crowns proudly during recess today.

On Monday, I introduced The Great Kindness Challenge (GKC) which is a global campaign promoting kindness in schools. The California Department of Education and State Superintendent, Tony Thurmond, are also cheerleading the need for student health and safety. This proactive anti-bullying campaign is aimed to promote a culture of kindness where acceptance, unity, and respect are core characteristics. Examples of kind acts include sitting with a new group of students at lunch, smiling at 25 people, picking up trash outside of school, eating a healthy snack, making a wish for a child in need, and creating your own kind deed. If you haven’t seen your child’s Great Kindness Challenge checklist, ask them! Attached is the TK-2 challenge and the 3-5 challenge. The goal is to complete as many acts of kindness by Friday. Once your child turns in the checklist to their classroom teacher, I will be compiling the data of the number of students who participated in kinds acts at Daves Avenue. Kindness matters!

Let's cruise back to the 1950s and see how the best street racer, Peggy Sue, moves to have aspirations to go to college. Her sister needs some help and one last race will make or break her college bound decision. Along the way, they stumble upon some trouble that puts some grease monkey trouble in the way. She brings her sister, old friends, and new friends together to help her build a car for her last race. Come see students from Blossom Hill, Daves Avenue, Lexington, and Van Meter perform this exciting show.
All shows are performed at Blossom Hill Elementary.

In December and January, Asset Building Champion (ABC) readers in grades 1-5 read the book
The Blue Day Book for Kids,
by Bradley Trevor Greive. This book uses kid-friendly and often silly photographs of animals to describe a range of relatable emotions.
One of Project Cornerstone’s goals is for students to have more self-awareness and tools to identify and name their feelings. All emotions, including blue emotions such as lonely and sad, are normal and temporary. When we recognize our emotions, there are things we can do to change direction and improve our mood.
The Blue Day Book for Kids
shares useful tips and tools to turn a blue day into a new day. Many kids feel an improvement in their mood after getting outside and moving their body. Many kids also benefit from breathing techniques, journaling, creating art, and unstructured play. Parents, we encourage you to role model naming and sharing your own emotions with your kids, and show empathetic listening when kids share their own. We are proud of our Daves Ave Cool Cats growing their empathy for others and continuing to develop their emotional awareness.
