Partnership with Northeast Florida Safety Council
The Florida Mine Safety Program is very excited to announce that we are partnering with the Northeast Florida Safety Council to offer mining courses, MSHA Law Classes and contractor workshops at their facility in Jacksonville.
The Northeast Florida Safety Council is a non-governmental, not-for-profit, public service organization dedicated to promoting good health, saving lives, preventing accidents and maintaining a safe and healthy environment through education, public awareness programs and activity.
Be on the lookout for links to interviews with Member Services Manager Bruce Press and Director of Environmental Health and Safety Lesa Dike. Courses will be offered beginning in September. A class schedule is coming out soon!

MSHA Part 48 Instructor Training
A prerequisite course to become a MSHA-approved instructor is being offered this fall. The classes will be held
September 1-3, 2020, September 29-October 1, 2020 and October 27-29, 2020 at the
National Mine Health & Safety Academy in
Beaver, WV.

The Mining Field Analyst & Training Specialist is a grant-funded position that is housed in the Florida Public Safety Institute in Quincy, FL. The specialist will assist the Mine Safety Program Coordinator in the operation of the Florida Mine Safety and Health Training Program.

Congratulations Sam!
Sam Pierce has been selected to fill the Senior Executive Service position of
Regional Administrator for Mine Safety and Health Enforcement in Beckley, West Virginia, for the Mine Safety and Health Administration, which became effective July 19, 2020.
Sam was the District Manager for the Southeast District, responsible for the operation of the District, which reflects MSHA's restructured combined coal and metal and nonmetal activities, developing an excellent collaborative environment with the coal and metal and nonmetal mining industry.
Congratulations Sam! The Florida Mine Safety/MSHA State Grants Program wishes you the best of luck in your new endeavor.

Message from the District Manager
The Mine Safety and Health Enforcement East Region Birmingham Office will have Acting District Managers on a 30-day rotation beginning with Brian Thompson, followed by Maryjo Bishop.
The mining community recently suffered two fatalities.
MSHA investigates each mining fatality and prepares documents in order to alert the mining community and prevent similar occurrences. To learn more, click here.

ts to working, communicating and collaborating in new ways, the TRAM Annual Conference has also adapted by going virtual in 2020.
This year's Training Resources Applied to Mining Conference will be held via WebEx on
October 14-15, 2020.

Remembering a True Professional
|
Cheryl McGill, 63, of Beckley, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2020. Cheryl was a remarkable person, friend and professional at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in Beaver, WV.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Beckley Presbyterian Church in Cheryl's name. Calfee Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and a Celebration of Life service will be held at Beckley Presbyterian Church.

The Florida Mine Safety Program (FMSP) aims to educate those who partake in mining operations by assisting mining companies and mining contractors with their health and safety training. For more than 30 years, the program has operated as a federally-funded grant program under the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), whose mission is to prevent death, disease and injuries in the mining industry. This is done through a variety of training courses, conferences and informational seminars offered by FMSP. These courses highlight proper emergency evacuation plans, health and safety standards and more. FMSP diligently works to ensure that miners working in both Florida metal and nonmetal operations are aware of the health and safety standards and are effectively trained to take precautionary measures. Through a collaborative effort, FMSP and MSHA Educational Field and Small Mine Services (EFSMS) work together to reduce the frequency and severity of mining accidents and ensure a safe environment for all.
