It will lay out the full horizon of future possibilities while highlighting both the unique opportunities and the grave dangers we are facing. It will break down exponential technologies such as AI, genetics, robotics, nanotech, synthetic biology, the blockchain, etc. and how those test the very meaning of being human. It will challenge, scare, and inspire you to start your own “Conversation with the Future” and hopefully give birth to your own ideas. It will finish by sharing ancient and modern strategies for building resilience and enhancing adaptation in every facet of your life.

Webcast: CIPS IFIP 60th Event Speakers Panel:
Data Privacy and Digital Governance
Watch the recording of the "CIPS IFIP 60th Event Speakers Panel: Data Privacy and Digital Governance" that took place on November 1st 2021 during "IT Professionalism Week 2021" and celebrates IFIP’s 60th Anniversary.

About this Webcast:

As of 2020 3.8 billion people use the internet for about 6 hrs and 43 mins a day and 74% say that are not aware that their activities and interests are being tracked. 78% also say that they are uncomfortable with lists being generated about them. As technology advances and legislation changes there is increasing need for better and more accessible information on data privacy and digital platform governance.

Responsible Artificial Intelligence Institute (RAII), Better Ethics and Consumer Outcomes Network (BEACON), The International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), the International Professional Practice Partnership (IP3) and the Canadian Information Processing Society (CIPS) have come together to discuss these concerns.

Each Organization briefly describes their role and their perspective on the challenge and what they are doing to help advance ethical professional practice.

Kudos to the latest Facebook whistleblower
By: Donna Lindskog, FCIPS, I.S.P. (ret.)

It is hard to be a whistleblower. Although it is easier in Canada than the U.S., anyone who reports their company for bad practices usually risks their job, or at the least a future promotion. The latest news about Facebook came from an employee who claims Facebook “stokes online hate and extremism” and “fails to protect children from harmful content.”

In reply to the follow-up response by Zuckerberg, the whistleblower argues the need for algorithmic regulation, research transparency, and independent oversight to be entirely valid for debate. A whistleblower must consider how important the revelation is to the public and to the company, and ethics requires that they take action if it is required.

29 November 15:00-16:15 CET
This session will examine the multidimensional challenge posed by cyber security skills, the need for which has gained increasing recognition on a global scale. One fundamental problem is that the desired skills are in short supply, resulting in recruitment and retention issues for employers. However, a further underlying challenge is that cyber security itself actually encompasses a broad range of areas, with different knowledge, experience and skillsets being relevant to different roles. This can result in knock-on challenges in understanding the skills landscape and interpreting whether particular skills are matched to our needs. The panel will consider these issues, including the part that academic qualifications, industry certifications and professional standards can potentially play in providing a solution.
