Nominations Now Open for the 2020 Orange County Arts Awards
The 21st Annual Orange County Arts Awards will take place on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 in the Samueli Theater at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa.  The nomination process for honorees is now open through March 1st. Details may be found here.

Meta Housing's Santa Ana Arts Collective seeks to support Southern California's working artists with long-term Affordable Housing, a tenant woodshop, music and performance practice space, a peer-to-peer learning environment, and colocation with a mission-oriented exhibition space. Arts patrons Charlie & Ling Zhang have funded a $500,000 renovation to the East Wing room in the Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library in Yorba Linda. More details here.
OC Filmmaker Offers Help to Save Iconic Laguna Beach Structure
Legendary IMAX filmmaker (and past Helena Modjeska Cultural Legacy honoree at the OC Arts Awards) Greg MacGillivray and his wife Barbara have offered to lease a 1935 building at the city's entrance to help facilitate its preservation. More details here.

Civil Rights Landmark School Acquired by Chapman University
The former Lydia D. Killefer School in Orange, which voluntarily desegregated in 1944, three years before the landmark Méndez v. Westminster decision, has been acquired from the Orange Unified School District by Chapman University. More details here. 
Governor Proposes Increased Funding for CA Arts Council; CAC Releases Report on Government Support of Local Arts Agencies
Governor Gavin Newsom's 2020-21 proposed budget includes a one-time $10 million increase in funding for the California Arts Council. $9 million would be targeted to support the state cultural districts designated around the state in a pilot program two years ago as well as additional districts to be named. The balance is for disaster preparedness. More details here.  In other news from the California Arts Council, the agency has released a study on how much county government & nonprofit arts agencies receive in local government support. The report may be downloaded here. 

The Otis Report on the Creative Economy has become a much anticipated annual study about the economic impact of the creative industries and nonprofit arts in our region and throughout the state. More details here.

3 OC Arts Organizations Win Grants in Latest Round of NEA Awards
The National Endowment for the Arts has announced its latest round of grants, and three Orange County arts organizations were awarded funds:
  • Pacific Chorale - $15,000 - for concert programs featuring works by women composers
  • Pacific Symphony - $25,000 - to commission a new work by composer Frank Ticheli
  • South Coast Repertory - $45,000 - to support the Pacific Playwrights Festival

Santa Ana Seeks Submissions for Utility Box Art + Rolls Out Guidelines for New Mural Program

Artists or artist teams who live, work, or study in Santa Ana are invited to submit proposals to create art for utility boxes. Deadline is Feb. 13. Details here.

Chance Theater Wins 2019 Ovation Award for Best Musical at an Intimate Theatre

Chance Theater's 2018-19 season production of "Lizzie," a punk-rock opera that explores the bloody legend of America's favorite axe-wielding sweetheart-diva-heroine-enigma-psychopath, Lizzie Borden, received top honors as Best Musical at an Inimate Theatre in LA Stage Alliance's annual Ovation Awards Arts.
