Forum Hosts Community Conversation

On September 10, SBE held a Community Forum in Yakima to get feedback on the equity and adequacy of new graduation pathway options for the class of 2020 and beyond.

“SBE forums are usually focused on a particular set of work or project, “said State Board of Education Basic Education Manager, Parker Teed. “It’s special in terms of being open government, in the sense that people can speak to Board Members and staff about their views. The idea is to lower barriers in candid communication.”

Webinar Follow-up: Q and A about New Graduation Requirement Rules

SBE hosted a webinar in August about proposed rules regarding graduation. SBE fielded around 40 questions and has compiled them on the FAQ section of the SBE website and in an accessible document with a linked table of contents.

Statistics in Schools

The Statistics in Schools Program, a FREE program that uses census data to create classroom materials for grades Pre-K through 12, officially launched in September. This coming school year, SIS activities will be more topical than ever and will help teach students and parents why it is so important to be counted in the census. 

Schools across the country are using SIS materials and planning for Statistics in Schools Week which will be March 2-6, 2020.

Some of the new materials for 2020 include:
  • More than 65 activities for pre-K through grade 12 that have students use data in interactive ways to build skills in history, math, English and geography.
  • Large, colorful maps with fun, census-based facts about the county and its territories
  • A storybook with activities and a music video for children in preschool and early grades.
  • Resources for English-language learners and adult English-as-a-second-language students.
