Tips to Keep Your Home Safe for All

September 2019

Is your 'Fall' plan in place?

The fall season is right around the corner. In fact, pumpkin flavored everything is already rolling out in all of the local stores and restaurants. Fall officially starts this weekend, so it's wise to begin looking at a safety plan for your elderly parents and other relatives. After all, being proactive is one of the best ways to avoid unnecessary issues.

As summer transitions into autumn, there will be many more trip hazards and slick surfaces than usual.  Be cautious of leaves and slick rainy surfaces.  Puddles and other wet surfaces can be hazardous for people of all ages, but its especially important to help the elderly avoid them.

One thing to consider is to have a safety assessment done by Home Healthsmith.  We can help you determine where the fall risks are in the home and help you prepare the home for the upcoming winter season.

If you are interested in learning more about the various types of accessibility products, please give us a call to schedule a presentation or stop by our facility at 207 High Point Ave., Unit 2 in Portsmouth, RI.

Why we do what we do...

"Dear Linda and crew,

Once again you and your crew exceed my expectations. This would be the 3rd time I have needed adjustments made to assist my 91 year old mother.  Grab bars in the shower, aluminum ramp and handles at the front and back door to help mom to balance herself as she steps into the house. Prompt, professional, personable...is a few words I use to describe your company to my neighbors, clients & friends. I can't say enough about the staff. Clint and I discussed mom's issues each time they arise and his suggestions were very helpful. These  changes allow me to keep her at home. I am sure I will be contacting you again as difficulties present themselves.

Thank you so much for making our home function safely for mom and my peace of mind! Please express our gratitude to your exceptional employees."

9 Priorities to Consider for the Aging in Place Home

Creating an environment that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional for your aging-in-place (AIP) home might seem like an uphill battle, but it shouldn't. The goal of any aging-in-place renovation is for the safety features to blend seamlessly with the home's overall style and design.

"Aging In Place May Be A Wake-Up Call For A Change In Our Abilities & Outlook On Life"

Aging - getting older - is hard. This is little we can do to prepare effectively for it - there is no owner's manual we can refer to or check. We've never been as old as we are right now. It's not something we can prepare for through experience. Sure, we can observe others - neighbors, parents, grandparents, family members, teachers, members of the community, and others as we are much younger to see how they handle themselves and listen to their stories of what they are encountering and dealing with - to the extent they are honest and forthcoming about what they are experiencing.
