The Rev. William Morris

The Rev. William Morris
Assisting Priest for Engaging Faith and the Workplace

Please welcome the Rev. Will Morris, who will be joining the ministry team at St. John's as an assisting priest.

Will was ordained in the Church of England in 2009 and was part of the clergy team at St. Martin-in-the-Fields for ten years. In addition to helping establish the healing ministry at St. Martin's, his main focus was on exploring links between church and the workplace, and on issues involving faith and work. He believes passionately that the workplace is an integral part of God's creation, and while definitely not perfect (what is?), is a critically important place for Christians to live out their faith and engage with the world. He has published two books: Where is God at Work? (2015) and Love thy Colleague (2017).

Will has recently returned to Washington with his wife Michelle after 16 years in London. Will is a UK lawyer by training, and US lawyer by adoption. He worked in DC in the 1990's, first in private practice and then at the Treasury Department across the Square. After Treasury, he joined GE in Connecticut, moving back to the UK in 2003. He returned to DC in April to work on tax policy at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Will and Michelle have three daughters, one who works on Capitol Hill and the other two attending college in Maine and Vermont. Will has degrees in history from Trinity College, Cambridge, in law from the University of Virginia, and in contextual theology from St. Mellitus College, London.

Will's role will be to serve as an assisting priest at St. John's, which means he is keeping his "day job," as he did during his years at St. Martin's. In addition to Sunday liturgical duties, his primary ministry will be helping St. John's develop ways to engage the spiritual needs of the thousands who work in the neighborhoods that surround us.

Host a Sunday Parish Lunch
Starting September 29

September 29, 2019 - May 17, 2020
Sign Up to Host A Sunday Parish Lunch!

Our beloved Parish Lunch tradition resumes on Sunday, September 29. Your help is needed to make it happen. Participate in one of the best fellowship opportunities at St. John's. Make new friends - both members and visitors - and catch up with old friends. We encourage individual members, families, and groups and ministries of our church to host lunches. Working with family and friends is FUN! It takes at least two people to pull it off. So, ... Talk to a friend - or two or three - about joining you to host a Sunday Lunch. The more the merrier! Hosts may be reimbursed for expenses or receive a tax receipt as you choose.

Detailed guidelines are sent to anyone who inquires. To sign up to host a lunch, contact Holly Sukenik, the lunch coordinator or contact Kaye Edwards in the Parish Office
Join the Parish Choir
The Parish Choir, a dedicated corps of volunteer musicians who provide musical leadership for Sunday morning services, welcomes new members. Midweek rehearsals are most Thursday evenings from 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m., with a light supper of sandwiches provided at 6:30 p.m. There is a straightforward voice trial for admission, but the main qualification is your interest in serving St. John's in its music program. The Parish Choir uses the Rule of St. Benedict as a guide for serving together in a community of faith and ends most rehearsals with a service of Compline in the nave. Additionally, the singing season is divided into "Quarters," which are focused commitments of eight to ten weeks.

Please be in touch with Brent Erstad, Acting Director of Music to learn more.

For more information or to register, please contact Kaye Edwards, Assistant for Church Growth.

Help Cardozo School Families
Tuesday, October 8
Volunteers are needed on the second Tuesday of every month, from 1:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., to help distribute food at Cardozo School. These free food "markets," are sponsored by Communities in Schools in partnership with The Capital Area Food Bank. Volunteers help with registration, unpacking the food, assisting the families, and cleaning up. The job is easy and fun: you get to chat with numerous people, and you can wear comfortable shoes! The next market is on October 8. For more information, contact Livy More at 202-291-8783.
Youth Pilgrimage to Kwasa College in South Africa
Summer 2020

Rising ninth-twelfth graders are invited to contact Savannah Ponder to apply to participate in a pilgrimage to The Kwasa College in Springs, Gauteng, South Africa. This pilgrimage will happen next summer. Kwasa is an educational center for children age three through grade five. St. John's has had a long relationship with Kwasa, both supporting their ministry financially and sending volunteers to visit the community. The Rev. Sharron Dinnie, the rector of Kwasa, has warmly invited St. John's youth to return to Kwasa next summer to build relationships, serve with the school, and learn more about their ministries with children. The requirements leading up to this pilgrimage would be participation in the following: monthly group meetings for prayer, faith formation, and fundraising planning, hosting parish-wide fundraising events leading up to the trip, and leading one presentation at St. John's after the trip.

If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please contact Savannah Ponder, Assistant for Ministries to Children, Youth, and Families.
Care of Creation Message
Nature Deficit Disorder?

"Time in nature is not leisure time; it's an essential investment
in our children's health (and also, by the way, in our own)."
Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods:
Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder

Our faith stories, beginning with Genesis, are grounded in knowledge and awareness of the natural world around our forebears. And yet our own daily urban lives often remove us from that very world.   Computers and cell phones restrict our vision, rather than expand it. Studies demonstrate the importance of time outside in green spaces for our physical as well as mental well-being - indeed for our spiritual health.

Are we open to and listening for the word of God in the natural world, our island home?

What we can do:
  • Enjoy a laugh.
  • Schedule intentional time outside.
  • Have children in our lives? Be deliberate about providing unstructured discovery time in the woods; take walks together.

REMINDER: Be Vigilant Against Continued Whaling/Phishing Scams
Email Whaling/Phishing Scams Persist -
Be Aware and Don't be a Victim!

Again, community members have received messages purporting to be from the Rev. Rob Fisher, asking for favors and gift card purchases.

These emails are not from Rob!

Rob and the rest of the staff at St. John's Church will never email anyone asking for gift card purchases. Treat this as a red flag and report it to staff immediately.

Any email from clergy or staff will have an address that ends with stjohns-dc.org.  Common phishing/whaling attempts use very similar looking email addresses from free services like Gmail or Yahoo.

Please do not open any suspicious emails that may come from any account. Delete them immediately. If you are unsure, please contact the Church Office (202-347-8766) for assistance.

To learn more about whaling/phishing attempts, visit the Diocese of Newark's blog post on the subject.
