News From St. Sarkis Church
Լուրեր Ս. Սարգիս Եկեղեցիէն

September 21, we celebrate the 28th anniversary of the independent Republic of Armenia. Less than five years after the massive public demonstrations in Yerevan calling for the return of Nagorno Karabakh, and the devastating earthquake,Armenia declared itself free and independent on September 21, 1991. the Armenian people lived and fought to maintain their religious faith and their own unique society. This declaration was a new milestone reaffirming that right to live as a people with its own way of life, its own beliefs, and on its own soil. May the Creator grace the Armenian nation with His protection.

Prayers For The Republic Will Be Offered This Sunday
By directive of the Prelate this Sunday, September 22, Prelacy parishes will offer special prayers for the Republic of Armenia on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of its independence. During the Requiem Service prayers will be offered for the new martyrs of Artsakh's struggle for independence.

O Christ our God, guardian and hope of the faithful, keep, guard, and bless the Republic of Armenia, the Armenian nation, the Armenian Church, and your people present in peace, under the protection of your holy and venerable cross. Deliver us from visible and invisible enemies. Make us worthy to thankfully glorify you together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen. (From "Prayer of Thanksgiving for the Republic of Armenia.")

Salt & Light Youth  Group
Written By Michael Gostanian

September is finally here, and everyone has their favorite things that come with it.  Maybe it's the cooler weather. Maybe it's football season. How about the St Sarkis picnic?  (Definitely!) Is it back to school? I guess that depends on whether you're asking a student or a parent.  What about next season of Salt & Light? ABSOLUTELY!

This past week, the facilitators for the St Sarkis Salt & Light Youth Group met with the Prelacy's Youth Ministry Director, Mrs Annie Ovanessian, and began planning for the upcoming fall session.  Our recent spring session was all about full group activities, with discussions focused specifically on practices and sacraments of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The coming fall session will continue its focus on the church, but the format will go back to small groups and our original YDisciple program.  For those who are new to Salt & Light, the YDisciple program consists of multimedia and other teaching resources, specifically geared towards our youth. Participants will once again be divided by gender and age group, and in most cases will be working with the same facilitators they've grown to have a relationship with since the start of the program.  The program's goal is not only to provide education on our faith, but also to provide mentors to help guide the participants.

As always, we have a lot things on the agenda for the season.  One of the things we're most excited about this season is our first ever Salt & Light Retreat.  On October 19-20, members ages 11-16 will have a weekend full of prayer, discussion, camp fires, and other activities.  The retreat will be held right here on Long Island, at Camp DeWolfe in Wading River, NY.

The fall session meetings are scheduled for Sept 20, October 4, October 19-20 (retreat), November 8, and November 22.  We can't wait to spend this time with our Salt & Light family, and look forward to seeing you all!

Bible Readings
Աստուածաշնչական Ընթերցումներ
THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL
TO THE CORINTHIANS (10.18 - 11.10)
For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
I hope you will put up with a little of my foolishness; but you are already doing that. I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough. But I do not think I am in the least inferior to those "super-apostles." I may not be a trained speaker, but I do have knowledge. We have made this perfectly clear to you in every way.

Was it a sin for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God to you free of charge? I robbed other churches by receiving support from them so as to serve you. And when I was with you and needed something, I was not a burden to anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied what I needed. I have kept myself from being a burden to you in any way, and will continue to do so. As surely as the truth of Christ is in me, nobody in the regions of Achaia will stop this boasting of mine.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
ACCORDING TO ST. MARK (10.1-12)
Jesus then left that place and went into the region of Judea and across the Jordan. Again crowds of people came to him, and as was his custom, he taught them.
Some Pharisees came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"
"What did Moses command you?" he replied.
They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."
"It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."
When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this. He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."

PAREGENTAN OF THE HOLY CROSS OF VARAK
This Sunday, September 22, is the Paregentan (Eve) of the Fast of the Holy Cross of Varak. Monday to Friday are fasting days leading up to next Sunday, September 25, when the Feast of the Holy Cross of Varak will be commemorated.

FEASTS OF SAINTS FEBRONIA, MARIANA, AND SHOUSHAN
Next Tuesday, September 24, the Armenian Church remembers Febronia, Mariana, and Shoushan. The best known of the three is Shoushan, daughter of Vartan Mamigonian and great-granddaughter of Sahag Bartev. She was educated under the tutelage of St. Sahag and her mother, Sahaganoosh. Her father's life and martyrdom influenced her to become a devout and faithful Christian. Her birth name was Varteny, but she was called Shoushan because of her extraordinary piety. She was married to Vazken, a son of a Georgian king, and had three sons and a daughter. After the death of her father-in-law, her husband became power hungry, went to Persia, renounced the Christian faith and returned to Georgia with another wife, and tried to force Shoushan to renounce her Christian faith. Even after years of imprisonment and torture she refused to renounce the faith for which her father had fought so valiantly.

Febronia was a nun of extraordinary beauty at Nisibis in Mesopotamia. She was offered to be spared from persecution and torture if she renounced her religion. She refused and was brutally martyred.

Although the daughter of idol worshipers, Mariana was raised by a woman who was secretly a Christian and was baptized at age twelve. At the age of fifteen she confessed to her father that she was a Christian. She refused to renounce her religion, and refused the offer of marriage by a local official telling him that she was "married to Christ." She was tortured and martyred.

Also commemorated this week:
