Dear Parents,
It was good to see you so many of you at Back to School Night. This is an exciting time of year for our teachers, staff, and students at Daves Avenue.
As most of you know, state education funding in California is among the lowest in the country, so our district relies on local funding sources and voluntary contributions to provide teachers, essential supplemental staff, and broad programming. In other words, our schools are only able to succeed thanks to parent and community support of our district’s fundraising partners.
Los Gatos Education Foundation
raises money from parents, local businesses and the community to help fund much needed teachers and staff at our school, including:
|
|
These dedicated individuals are critical to providing our children with a balanced educational experience. LGEF’s Fall Campaign to provide funds for these positions has begun. To get involved, or to donate, please visit:
www.lgef.org
I’d also like to encourage you to support
Daves Avenue Home & School Club
. Our H&SC organizes events and funds vital materials and programs such as:
|
|
Our Home & School Club’s fall fundraising campaign is also underway, so for complete info, and to make a contribution please visit:
www.DavesAveHSC.org
The most important role you can play in our school community is to be engaged with your child's education and to participate in classroom and school activities. Your financial help is also very important. Please support Daves Avenue Home & School Club and LGEF at whatever level is comfortable for your family, and thank you for all you do for our wonderful Los Gatos public schools.
Yours sincerely,
Principal, Daves Avenue Elementary

IMPORTANT DISTRICT MESSAGES
|
|
As we embark on gathering input from all stakeholders in our strategic planning process, we have thoughtfully revised our local district climate survey to gather information from our most important stakeholders—our students. The survey focuses on student’s perspectives surrounding safe, supportive, and engaging school experiences. We would like your student to participate in this survey.
The survey will be given in grades 4-8 between October 21 and October 25.
The survey measures specific school based attitudes, behaviors, and experiences that relate to how our students feel connected and engaged with their school.
Participation is voluntary. You will receive more information about participation or opting out early in October.
A copy of the survey will be available for preview in each school office between October 1 and October 11.

WE ARE A CORNERSTONE SCHOOL
|
|
This month, Asset Building Champion (ABC) readers in grades 1-5 read the book
Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon,
by Patty Lovell. This book portrays a girl who demonstrates positive self-talk and resiliency when teased. Molly Lou Melon is empowered by her grandmother, who has taught her to stand tall, smile big, and sing while being proud of who she is. The story is a fun and colorful illustration of self-confidence as Molly Lou Melon’s grandmother says,
“Believe in yourself and the world will believe in you, too.”
Our Daves Ave Cool Cats are continuing to practice being UPstanders, as well as including others at school and in the greater community. This month, our lesson focus is on building confidence and realizing we hold personal power to choose how to react when someone tries to dip in our bucket or throw a hook. Parents and caring adults help children develop a positive self-concept when they recognize, name and celebrate specific qualities and skills in children. As role models, parents and caring adults are encouraged to demonstrate positive self-talk and pride in being your authentic self.

What are relevant questions in today’s education?
What are some challenges we all face as parents?
How can we support parents navigating their parenting journey?
|
|
If this strikes a chord in you, then you may want to be part of the Parenting Continuum at Daves Avenue. We have opportunities to get involved for both working and non-working parents.
Ways to help:
- Research speakers for relevant & current parenting challenges
- Organize logistics and speakers
- Update Facebook page and web page with relevant details
- Market the event in our community
- Moderate the event for the local parents
- Draft write-ups for the schools’ newsletters
Parenting Continuum is a passionate mix of people that bring together a varied set of skills and interests to create an inspiring speaker agenda for the year. Plus, you will personally learn and grow.
There is a lot of flexibility in this role and it’s up to the team how they organize themselves. Generally, we aim to host about 4 significant speakers per year.
For more information, please attend our first meeting on
Tuesday, Sept 24th from 8:30-9:00 am at Daves Avenue school, Room 4.
