Oak Harbor Educator Named Civic Engagement Champion
Don Jenkins is one of four teachers being honored by the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) as Civic Engagement Champions (CEC) for their work in promoting civics education and active citizenship.
Jenkins teaches history at North Whidbey Middle School in Oak Harbor. His students have researched local issues as part of their history and social studies classes. Recently, they used their history lessons on the Lewis and Clark expedition to take action protecting grizzly bears. Starting with their historical research, they then used scientific data, articles reflecting the views of ranchers and environmentalists, and interviews with experts. That research informed recommendations on whether grizzly bears should be removed from the threatened list in the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem or added to the North Cascades Ecosystem.
Considering the System: Graphic Representation of 100 Students & 100 Teachers
The 2019-2023 Strategic Plan contains six goals for the State Board of Education and focuses on five areas of the education world to measure progress--one of them is system design.
To better understand our system's current state, and to direct our conversation about system design, SBE has created an infographic to display what our education system would look like with a sampling of 100 students and 100 teachers. You can find the definitions of each area on the wheel by downloading the 100 Students PDF. Data is courtesy of the OSPI Report Card and reflective of students attending school in the 2017-18 school year.
