PHOTOS: Students earn on-the-spot admissions at HBCU College Fairs
About 30 students from Folsom High and Cordova High recently had the opportunity to learn more about Historically Black Colleges and Universities - and several received on-the-spot admissions based on their grades and SAT scores!

The students took part in the annual HBCU fairs on Sept. 12 sponsored by the United College Action Network , which held sessions for students at Grant High School and El Camino High School in neighboring school districts.

The field trips to the college recruiting fairs were led by Folsom High counselors Clara Brown and Nikka Vaughan; Melody Smith-Williams, a Cordova High teacher and advisor to the school's Black Student Union; Dr. Channa Cook-Harvey, the District's Director of Social Emotional Learning; and parent volunteers.

Tech Trek summer camp provides STEM learning for middle school girls
This summer, four of our middle school girls from Mills and Mitchell had the opportunity to experience Tech Trek , an annual STEM camp at UC Davis, which allows students to "explore science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-related academic and career opportunities." Tech Trek is made possible by The American Association of University Women (AAUW) which " seeks to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research."

According to the AAUW organizers of Tech Trek, "Research findings have shown that middle school is a critical time when girls tend to stray from studying math, science, engineering and technology." This camp not only provided hands-on learning in STEM related fields, girls are mentored by women professionals in science and math fields, and get to spend a week in the college dorms at UC Davis, giving them a taste of college life.

Every girl who attends Tech Trek is afforded a scholarship, through generous sponsorships. We'd like to sincerely thank our local partners, SMUD , Golden State Water and Aerojet Rocketdyne for paving the way so our students could be a part of this camp.
VIDEO: Cordova High JROTC commemorates Sept. 11 attacks
As school began last Wednesday, Cordova High School's Air Force JROTC led the school community in a somber tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Led by instructor MSgt Phil Magreevy, the cadets and color guard raised a special version of the American Flag, inscribed with the names of the nearly 3,000 victims who died in the historic attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

FMS student gives back to school through Eagle Scout Project

Daniel Granger, a junior at Vista del Lago High School, started out as a Cub Scout 10 years ago and has been a Boy Scout for the last five years. He will become an Eagle Scout in a couple of months.

Over a year ago, Granger started construction on a kiosk that now holds a welcome sign directing visitors at FMS to the front office. This project was a part of a requirement to get to the rank of an Eagle. As FMS was the school that Granger attended and he wanted to give back to the school, he selected this site to be his project.

Granger is thankful for the help that he got from volunteers from various scouts and leaders in his home troop, Troop 1855, and from his friends on the Vista del Lago Cross Country team. His advice for middle school students considering joining Eagle Scouts, "If any middle schooler wants to join the Scouts and try to achieve Eagle, I'd say that it's not too late to go for it and have fun along the way".
