A Message from Celia
Dear SCC colleagues,

As you receive this newsletter you will likely be administering final exams, preparing to wrap up the semester, and amazed that 2021 is nearly over. The good news is that we made it! We survived another year of COVID while taking care of our students, coworkers, and ourselves, and we are preparing for spring 2022. I suspect this next semester will bring new challenges and uncertainty, as well as new found joy and gratitude.

This spring, we will continue our vaccinate or test and wear a mask mandate for those coming to campus. We expect to make the compliance process easier for students and employees by providing a single point of contact for uploading proof of vaccine and COVID test results. I ask that each of us do our part to comply with the mandate. Free COVID testing at the Fairfield campus will continue and we plan to host another COVID vaccine clinic at one or more of our campuses once the spring semester begins. You can find details about COVID and our protocols at https://welcome.solano.edu/coronavirus/.

During the winter break from December 27-January 3, and while IT and facilities, maintenance, and custodial staff are relocating services from the old to the new LRC, primary communication systems- email, phones, MySolano, Canvas- will be down. You will not have access to the campus systems or services and the Fairfield campus will be closed. Please make sure to clean out your office refrigerators, take home items that will not survive without light or heat, and plan on resting during this time. When we return in January, we will have moved the ASTC, the Broadcasting Studio, and IT services into the new LRC but we will not open the building until our Library is complete. Look for details about a February ribbon-cutting event when we return.

To each of you, thank you for getting through this year, for being patient with each other and for your continued commitment and support. Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, healthy, and restful holiday season.

Celia
Get Ready for Spring Classes
Spring priority registration is underway.

Students can check their registration date on MySolano. SCC will be offering more on ground classes this spring. Check out our spring class schedule!

A reminder to those who will be coming to the campus; either upload your vaccination status or get tested (see updated information on testing below). This requirement went into effect October 15. If you uploaded your vaccination record this fall, you will not need to do it again in the spring.

Watch the SCC website and Canvas for information on uploading proof of vaccine and test results for the spring semester.

To upload proof of vaccine and test results for the spring semester, email Covidcaseworker@solano.edu.
COVID Testing Update
SCC is now working with Inspire Diagnostic to provide free, on-campus COVID testing for employees and students.

Testing will be conducted in Building 1700 - on the following days and hours:

Monday: 8:00am – 1:30pm and 4:00pm – 6:30pm
Tuesday: 10:00am – 1:30pm
Wednesday: 10am – 1:30pm and 4:00pm – 6:30pm
Thursday: 8:00am – 1:30pm
Friday: 10:00am – 1:30pm

*Please note there will be no testing available when the campus is closed.

In order to take advantage of this convenient testing option, people will go to one of the following links depending on their status:

  • Students:

  • Student Athletes:

  • Employees:

You only need to provide your name, address, cell phone number and email address. The college is paying for the cost of the testing, so no insurance information is required.

Once you have registered, you will receive a QR code. This code will be scanned at the testing site when you come to be tested. This allows you to receive your test results within 24 to 48 hours of taking the test. However, if you test on Friday you will not receive your test results until the end of the day Monday.

Coat Drive with Women's Basketball Team
Matt Borchert coordinated a coat drive with the members of the women’s basketball team. Matt and the team made the holiday season warmer for several of the Early Learning Center’s children yesterday when they provided 15 sweaters, jackets and coats. The spirit of giving is abundant at Solano College!
SCC Alumna is Woman of the Year
Solano graduate and current Vice-Mayor of Suisun City, Wanda Williams, received a Woman of the Year Award last month.

Every year, Rep. John Garamendi, D-Solano, honors women in his district who have made significant contributions to their community.

This year, the congressman recognized 44 women nominated by their peers, including 21 honorees from Solano County, the most of any county.

“Every year I have the honor of recognizing the achievements and service of these distinguished women,” Garamendi said in a press statement. “These leaders come from a variety of backgrounds, but every one of them has made a real difference to their communities and the people around them. It’s a privilege to be able to honor them.”

Williams is a city council member who founded the city’s Children’s Art Fair and Adopt-a-Neighborhood program and has worked to provide self-improvement opportunities for incarcerated youth.

Also nominated and included in the group photo above is adjunct faculty member Ana Petero.
Congrats to All-USA Academic Nominees
A big shout-out to two SCC students who have been selected to represent Solano Community College as nominees in the 2021-2022 All-USA Academic Team competition. Andrea Solis (left photo) and Cherry Santo were both nominated for the All-USA / Coca-Cola Academic Team.

Their commitment to academic excellence and community service is commendable. They will now be placed in competition for the All-USA Academic Team, Coca-Cola Academic Team, and the New Century Pathway Scholarship Awards. Phi Theta Kappa will notify scholars of their placement on national teams by April 2022.

Solis said she is so happy she chose to pursue her education at SCC. "After SCC I hope to gain some type of hands-on experience after completing my associates in an internship or a part time job related to engineering," she said. "My plans also include transferring to a 4-year-university and earning a Bachelor's in Civil/Environmental Engineering. After earning my bachelors I would love to have the opportunity to go to grad school and obtain a Master's in urbanism/city planning/sustainability/transportation and other topics related to civil engineering."

Solis is thrilled to have been nominated for the All-USA Team. "I am very proud of this nomination and to be able to represent Solano along with Cherry. This nomination embodies many goals I set out to achieve while at Solano and it makes me happy to see that some of these personal achievements are considered worthy of this nomination. I hope that I can make the rest of the Solano community proud with the projects that I have worked on and I hope these projects continue to grow in the coming semesters."
Santo (right photo) was also excited to be nominated.

"I was so thrilled to find out I was chosen as one of the nominees for the All-USA academic team," Santo said. "It was my first attempt at a scholarship, so I wasn't sure how I'd fare with other students. It's nerve-racking to come back to college after 23 years and having to do it all online. But since last Spring, I have continued to push and work hard in my classes. Being a mom, wife, and student is a lot to juggle, and I'm blessed to have a strong support system."

Santo is a biology major and will be either staying at SCC to take on the Biomanufacturing bachelor's degree or transfer to UC Davis.

Congratulations to you both!
