OUR LORDS PRAYER – JOHN 17
LESSON 13 – vs. 11-12
John 17:11 (KJV) continues Jesus’ prayer for His disciples.
“and now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to Thee (Father).”
Jesus knew His earthly ministry was now finished. This prayer was the last ministry act, and it was now only His sacrifice that was to be completed. The Church calls this ordeal “The Passion of Christ.” He is now ready to sacrifice Himself and return to the Father. That is why He said,
“I am no more in the world…I come to thee.”
However,
“these are (still) in the world.”
So
, “Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom Thou hast given me…”
. Everyone belonged to God the Father (Psalm 24:1). These had been given to Jesus by the Father. They belonged to both Father and Jesus, so He was asking Father to keep them secure in the kingdom of Heaven, so
“that they may be one
(just)
as we
(Son and Father)
are.”
Verse 12 says,
“While I was with them in the world
(earth)
, I kept them in Your name.
” Now that He was leaving the world to sit with Father in heaven’s throne room, they would be kept in both names since Son and Father rule as one.
Verse 12 continues,
“those that thou gavest me I have kept (with me), and none is lost
(except)
but the son of perdition
(so)
that the scripture might be fulfilled.”
Judas had already departed at the “last supper” to sell out Jesus. He was no longer with them at the time of this prayer. Judas sold Him out for thirty pieces of silver, as Jesus said to fulfill the messianic prophecy found in Zachariah 11:12-13.
“If ye think it good, give me my price, and if not, forbear (said the betrayer). So, they weighed for my price (the messiah) thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said…’cast it unto the potter’…and I (the betrayer) took the thirty pieces of silver and cast them to the potter…”
This precise prophecy was given five hundred years earlier. It not only spoke of the exact price for which Judas sold out Jesus, but when Judas offered to give it back to the Jewish authorities the silver was refused. Judas then went to the potter’s field and cast out the money there before hanging himself in the potter’s field
Everything to the minutest detail had been fulfilled. The holy Sacrificial Lamb was ready. Immediately after this prayer was finished, He went to the garden to begin His route from Gethsemane to Calvary. However, we still must finish His prayer in the coming lessons, so stay tuned.
