EVANS WEEKLY
Issue: #8
September 20, 2019
Dear Panther Parents,

Let's start off with some celebrations...our extremely talented band program just found out this week that they have won a NATIONAL award called Mark of Excellence.  This is a huge honor and we couldn't be more proud of the hard work and dedication shown by Ms. Williams and Ms. Burns and all of our Panther band students.  Congrats!!

Have I mentioned that we have the best PTO in town?  Well, let me tell you it is TRUE!!  They work to ensure that our students and our staff get all the things needed to have a successful school year.  Please follow our PTO Facebook page and "like" what you see.  Also, if you have not joined this exceptional group, please scroll down to the PTO segment of the newsletter and support this awesome group!

Next weekend is our MISD Annual Crape Myrtle Run, and I need your help!!  Last year, we came in 3rd  for having the most people registered online for the event.  This year WE ARE GOING FOR THE GOLD!!  So, grab your walking/running shoes and come join us for the Crepe Myrtle Run next Saturday.
Schools reap the benefits when the Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney Foundation donates $5 to schools' P.E. Department for every registered runner who lists a school during the online registration. It's a great way to not only encourage healthy habits for our youth but also provides grant money into our schools P.E. Depts. to build on the healthy habits for our kids. Last year, $4,500 total grants were awarded to area schools - with the top three schools - McClure 1st place, Wilmeth 2nd Place, and  Evans 3rd Place.
To register as a runner: http://getmeregistered.com/CMTMcKinney5K

And a very important message from MISD:

Districts across Texas are dealing with the challenge of students making threats toward other students and/or their school. In most of these cases, students make impulsive statements, texts or social media posts to impress their friends, or they claim that they are intended as a joke. In most cases, these do not pose an immediate threat to the safety of students or the school.
However-and this is where we need help from McKinney ISD parents-every threat will be taken seriously in MISD and investigated in partnership with the McKinney Police Department. That means that claiming a post or text was intended to be a joke or that it was a flippant statement or impulsive reaction is not a valid defense. In every case, MISD involves the McKinney Police Department, and the student will be held criminally responsible for his/her actions.
Please have a dialogue with your children about the significance of inappropriate or threatening statements, texts, social media posts or Snapchat posts. Please remind them that these statements can result in a permanent criminal record and even felony charges. Students will face both district and legal consequences for making any statements deemed to be a threat.
We will continue to take necessary steps to ensure a safe and secure learning environment at every MISD campus, and you can help us by having ongoing conversations with your children about the significance of what they say, text and post. Thanks for your ongoing support.

Reminder about traffic procedures in the front parking lot: please do not turn into the Evans parking lot off of Hillsdale Dr.  We only enter the front of the building from the Eldorado Pkwy entry.  Also, golf carts are not permitted on our sidewalks or entryways.  If you have a licensed golf cart, you need to follow the same procedures that cars follow to drop off and pick up children.  If you do not have a licensed golf cart, you are welcome to drop your kiddo off from a sidewalk before coming onto school property.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 469-302-7113.  We appreciate you teaming with us to help keep our students safe.

If your child received Free or Reduced Lunch, the deadline for those applications is September 30th.   Please make sure you have all paperwork submitted so your child can continue to receive this service.  Please remember that there is no charging of lunches at the Secondary level, but we will make sure every child eats.  The meal that is provided when students don't have money and does not receive free and reduced meals is a sunbutter sandwich, a veggie, and a juice.

This year, we have a new Registrar, Paula Lough.  She is fabulous, but if you are used to contacting Lynne Wells, please know that her email account is no longer active.  Also, we have a new Counselor secretary, Kelly Sojack.  She is also a great new addition, and she replaced Nidya Colón.  We welcome these two ladies to our Panther team.

Happy Friday,

Darla

      NOTES FROM OUR NURSE

New Findings Regarding E-Cigarettes
Health department investigates severe lung disease among e-cigarette users

The Texas Department of State Health Services is investigating suspected Texas cases of severe lung disease in adolescents who used e-cigarettes. DSHS was first notified of possible cases last week following similar reports in youth and young adults in several other states.
A DSHS health alert asks health care providers to watch for cases of severe lung disease and ask about e-cigarette use, or vaping, in patients with severe respiratory symptoms like cough, shortness of breath and fatigue. DSHS is urging clinicians who identify cases to gather information about the products used and ask patients to save the vaping liquid in case it's needed for testing.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 94 cases of severe lung disease associated with vaping in 14 states dating back to late June. All patients have tested negative for infectious diseases, and some have required hospitalization. In addition to respiratory symptoms, some patients experienced nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
More information is needed to determine a cause, and DSHS is working with the CDC, the Food and Drug Administration and other states to gather evidence about what the cases have in common and what is leading to the injuries.
Vaping is not safe for kids, youth or young adults. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, an addictive chemical that can affect brain development in the teens and 20s. Using nicotine in adolescence can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood and impulse control. Find more vaping facts by clicking HERE.
(News Media Contact: Chris Van Deusen, DSHS Director of Media Relations, 512-776-7119)   This service is provided to you at no charge by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

TWO WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL

It's easier than ever for you to make a difference at Evans! We have two new ways for you to support our school while you shop, without any extra cost to you.

Do you shop at Kroger? Evans Middle School PTO is now enrolled with Kroger's Community Rewards program. If you already have a Kroger Rewards Card, log in to your account at www.kroger.com and then click Enroll. You can search for Evans Middle School PTO or enter our code, AF012. New users will need to create an account, which requires some basic information, a valid email address, and a Rewards Card. You must have a registered Kroger Rewards Card account to link it to our school. If you don't have a card, they a

When you shop through Amazon Smile, Evans Middle School PTO will receive 0.5% of most purchases to fund programs, events, and grants at our school. To get started, designate Evans PTO as your charitable organization by going to https://smile.amazon.com/ch/57-1206927. Then every time you shop, start at smile.amazon.com and our school will benefit (at no cost to you!).
Please share these ways to support Evans Middle School with friends. Thanks for your support!

      LEARNING COMMONS

Everyone says that middle school is awful, but Trent knows nothing could be worse than the year he had in fifth grade, when a freak accident on Cedar Lake left one kid dead, and Trent with a brain full of terrible thoughts he can't get rid of. Trent's pretty positive the entire disaster was his fault, so for him middle school feels like a fresh start, a chance to prove to everyone that he's not the horrible screw-up they seem to think he is.

If only Trent could make that fresh start happen.

It isn't until Trent gets caught up in the whirlwind that is Fallon Little--the girl with the mysterious scar across her face--that things begin to change. Because fresh starts aren't always easy. Even in baseball, when a fly ball gets lost in the sun, you have to remember to shift your position to find it.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Remember that we have a college and career portal called Naviance for all McKinney ISD students grade 6-12. The new link is on the Evans homepage or can be found here:
The user id and password are s and student ID number.

      WHAT'S FOR LUNCH?
      SCHOOL SAFETY

A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the uniform classroom response to any incident. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by all McKinney ISD schools and District Administration and staff. Historically, schools have taken this scenario-based approach to respond to hazards and threats. Each McKinney ISD classroom is furnished with the Standard Response Protocol poster that provides teachers with readily accessible response procedures and provides information during a crisis event. The attached handout explains Standard Response Protocol that is taught to students, faculty and staff.

Please click the link below to view the Standard Response Protocol parent handout.

   STUDENT FOOD DELIVERY

Due to a variety of safety concerns related to food allergies and campus safety and security,  McKinney ISD will no longer allow students to utilize food delivery services at school. This includes services such as Uber Eats, Doordash and direct restaurant delivery. However, parents/guardians will still be permitted to drop food off for their children.

This rule does not apply to deliveries organized by McKinney ISD faculty or a teacher serving as a sponsor of a student organization. We appreciate your cooperation in our efforts to create a safe and secure environment for students.
