Dear Friends of The Blue Purl,

Since the holidays are upon us, we thought about preaching a bit on the value of giving. You know: it’s better to give than to receive. Please give to those in need.

But then, we realized, you all know about giving. You really don’t need us to preach its value. It is part of who we are as individuals who knit and crochet. It is so much of what inspires us, the joy of giving something we have made with our hands and hearts to someone else.

Very often, the recipient is a loved one or friend. But this time of year, we don’t even have to ask and many of you are knitting hats and scarves to help keep warm those who are not as lucky as we are. We have already donated so many pieces of your work to Nourish NJ.

Thank you.

There are some days that can weigh heavily on all of us. We had hoped the pandemic would be behind us and yet, it still fills the news. We had hoped that life would be back to its pre-pandemic rhythm. And while a lot of things are back, it is not quite what we hoped 2021 would bring.

But something else extraordinary happened this last year. We have adjusted, found joy, and learned that while we cannot control what the world throws at us, we have the power to control how we respond.

We really do feel your generosity, empathy and warmth every day in our shop. You have helped lift us each day and we hope that we have helped you, too.

That is part of giving. It's sharing your optimism which is exactly what you do when you give a handmade item to someone else. The very act of creating is an act of optimism because it says, "I know there will be a future and I want to help make it better."

So, let’s charge into the holidays together and carry on as always, spreading the warmth and love each of you produce with your own hands.

We are honored to be here to help.
