A Note from Principal of the Day
Principal Grayson...

Hello from Grayson! Exciting things are happening this week. We have Nightrageous 3 on Friday, which is going to be AWESOME! Friday, we also have the Young Audience of Houston coming to our campus to give an Aztec dance performance. On Wednesday, I was able to be “Principal for the Day,” and I wanted to share some of the duties I had to complete.

First, I greeted all the teachers and then I helped out with carpool and greeted middle school students as they arrived. After carpool, I got to assist Mr. Mitch in his music class. My next task was to meet with Mrs. Ginger about a field trip budget, and then Mrs. Debi about the graduation program. After both of these meetings I was then able to help Mr. Mitch prepare and set-up a puppet show stage for Nightrageous. We had a lot of fun and I was a huge help. Finally, my morning ended with helping Mr. Jaime replace the water bottles in the office. It was cool that I got to use the dollies.

During the second half of the day I had a special lunch from SmashBurger and ate in the office with Mr. Justin. During lunch I changed the recess policy and allowed students to use their laptops and passed out donuts. Then to make it even better I extended recess for an extra 10 minutes. All the students were so happy and thanked me. They said I was the “best principal ever, and that I rocked!” After recess I went with Mr. Justin and did a tour of the school to check on classrooms and teachers to make sure everything was going well. All the teachers were great and didn’t need my help, however I did console a student who was having a tough time calming down. We had a serious talk and I told him thanks for being such a good teammate. After our observation and walk-throughs, the leadership team and I had a meeting to discuss future activities here at Crossroads. I was able to convince them that we should take a field trip to Exitus VR. We will do more research, but I got everyone excited about making this a possibility. My day ended by writing an email to the teachers and writing this article for the newsletter.

Overall, “my day was great and my favorite part was all of it.”

Sincerely,
Principal Grayson

Calmecac Indigenous People Dance

The Calmecac Tonantzin Yolilitzyotl (Houston Aztec Dance & Drum Group) came to Crossroads today. They are a community family-based group dedicated to learning and teaching Mexicayotl dancing, drumming, and culture. This dance circle is dedicated to preserve and share traditional Indigenous Mexica philosophy, history, customs, culture and arts to communities in Houston, Texas. Our students enjoyed learning some songs and some dances!
After-school
Cooking Club

This week’s recipe was a special Ramadan treat - sambusas! The boys all joined in with specific tasks to create the herbal, spiced ground beef filling for these savory pastries. Then, each student added a dollop of the filling to a long strip of phyllo dough, and carefully folded it up like a flag into a little triangle. We froze the sambusas overnight, and the next day, baked some samples for them and their adventurous classmates to enjoy. They were a hit! Happy Ramadan!
Elephant Toothpaste!
We have been learning about chemical reactions and recently introduced the topic of catalysts. We mixed 6% Hydrogen Peroxide with a catalyst, yeast, to speed up the reaction and breakdown of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. We mixed the peroxide with dish soap and food coloring in the original container and that mixed with all the water and oxygen created. It made a LOT of soapy foam. The kids really loved watching it foam up and 'explode'.
Please mark your calendars to attend the culminating event for this school year. "Graduation" is for all students. Each will be called up on stage. Each student will receive a certificate specific to their talents. It will be held in the Social Hall at Congregation Brith Shalom at 4610 Bellaire Blvd . The parking and entrance is located in the rear of the facility, off of Cedar Street.
