Ontario By Bike E-News: September
Round Rice Lake Ride

Even with an estimated quarter of a million lakes in Ontario, there are likely only a very small percentage that make for a compelling round the lake ride and achievable challenge limited to a day or two max. One to certainly add to the 100km+ bucket list is around Rice Lake. Straddling Northumberland and Peterborough Counties, this 32km long and relatively shallow lake is a part of the Trent-Severn Waterway.

Perfect for a group or club ride, tackling this 102km looped circuit in a day, is best achieved with a start from Bewdley, on the west end of the lake. With lots to see and do along the route, plan to take some extra time to stop along the way or best yet add a day.

Chez Nous: Norfolk Explorer Tour

Looking for a great fall riding adventure? Consider this off-centered humorous historical biking trail adventure in magnificent Norfolk County wine country. Explore what the first European explorers called the " earthly paradise of Canada", celebrate and taste what makes Norfolk County, Ontario's Garden. This tour in south western Ontario includes local feast offering, wine and a special edition bottle to take home! Only 2 more tour dates this season: September 16 & October 6. Find out more HERE.
Bike Show: Fall Sale & Spring News

Put October 5th in your calendar. Head to Exhibition Place in Toronto for the annual Bicycle Fall Blowout Sale. Pick up some of the hottest bike and accessory deals of the year at this one day only event. Big news from the bike show - the spring show is on the move! In 2020, North America's largest bike show, to be held March 6 to 8, will be at a new location: The International Centre, in Mississauga. Ontario's Best Bicycle Friendly Businesses

On March 1, Ontario By Bike / Transportation Options held its 4th Cycle Tourism Conference in Toronto. As part of the program, we hosted the inaugural Bicycle Friendly Business Awards selecting one Ontario By Bike certified bicycle friendly business from each of the 13 tourism regions in Ontario.

We have been showcasing the 13 Best Bicycle Friendly Business Award winners in this enewsletter throughout the year. Consider stopping in at one of these locations on your next cycling adventure in their region!

Our last of the 13 bicycle-friendly business awards went to Maja's Organic Bakery. This Artisan bakery in the heart of Manitoulin Island, offers freshly made bread, cakes, cookies and more.

During the summer this buzzing and vibrant place also organizes a variety of bike events, bike tours, workshops, concerts and tea-party lunches all topped by local products that can be purchased right from their garden.

Make sure you stop by for a break on your cycling trip and treat yourself with a tasty snack or learn more about biodiversity and organic gardening.  Majas.ca

Maja's is also home to the Manitoulin Cycling Advocates, who have developed the routes around the island, host bike tours and coordinate the annual Manitoulin Passage Ride.

There are now over 1,500 bicycle friendly locations in Ontario, certified by Ontario By Bike. Check the full listing here
Favourite After Ride Activity

Earlier this summer we have asked our Ontario cycling community how you like to spend your time after a ride on your bike.

With the same answer from more than 50% of all respondents to the survey, we found a clear winner. The favourite post ride activity is to enjoy having a cold refreshment on the patio, relaxing preferably with a cold beer!

Other notable activities that seem to be popular after a ride were "a cold shower or a nice bath", "a yummy energizing meal", or a swim in the lake/river.

If you are looking for a cafe, restaurant, patio to enjoy after your next ride make sure you check out our bicycle-friendly restaurants and cafes on
