District 6 Newsletter
January 2020

Dear Neighbors,

Happy New Year! We're off to a great start with a vision for 2020. I'll be hosting a State of the District Community Meeting on Wednesday, January 29th, at the Willow Glen Community Center from 6:30 p.m. - 8: 30 p.m. with a year-in-review and a vision for what lies ahead. We're also hosting three guest speakers - one from the San Jose Fire Department to talk about the construction of Fire Station 37, one from the Code Enforcement Department to brief us on issues of blight and enforcement, and finally from the Department of Transportation about the citywide pavement plan. I hope you join us!

Please let my office know if you are interested in hosting or attending one of these discussions.

Proposed North Willow Glen Conservation Area

On January 28, 2020, the City Council is scheduled to nominate the North Willow Glen neighborhood as a Conservation Area. This will begin the formal designation process.

A Conservation Area is a means of preserving and enhancing the character of qualifying neighborhoods. The focus of a Conservation Area is to maintain the basic historic character of the area and was identified as an important action item in the Greater Gardener Strong Neighborhoods Initiative planning efforts.

The proposed boundary is Bird Avenue on the west, Willow Street on the south, Delmas Avenue on the east, and the railroad line at the north. A historic resources survey of the area found a very high concentration of historic homes and features.

The Historic Landmarks Commission supports the formation of Conservation Areas in the Greater Gardner area. Separate public hearings of the Historic Landmarks Commission and the Planning Commission will be set for Spring 2020, before the City Council's final approval expected in early Summer 2020. Public hearing notices to all property owners will be sent in early February 2020.

For more information you can contact Juliet Arroyo, the Historic Preservation Officer, at Juliet.Arroyo@sanjoseca.gov or at 408-535-7847.

New Stop Sign at Coe Avenue

Transfer Tax Measure for 2020 Ballot

I did not support the Property Transfer Tax Measure since it is a general tax and not guaranteed to be spent on our housing and homelessness crises. I still do not support this tax measure. However, polls suggest it is likely to pass. That is why, during Council, I voted to support the spending priorities as a "guard rail" to protect the intention of the tax if it does pass.

Kittens First

Kittens First, a non-profit organization, was founded in 2019 out of the compassion of a shelter veterinarian, Dr. Tiva Hoshizaki, city employees, volunteers, and kitten advocates.

Kittens First's mission is to prevent the euthanasia of homeless kittens through education. Kittens First aims to empower our community with innovative programs, online and in-person classes.

Kittens First believes that every single kitten deserves a chance to live and that is why they are putting "Kittens First". It costs just $50 to save one kitten. Kittens First is aiming to save over 1,000 kittens in 2020, and our community could make that possible.

Remove It or Lose It

SJPD is kicking off a new crime prevention campaign, "Remove it or Lose it" tis the Season to be Safe. Vehicle burglaries and thefts are crimes of opportunity which occur at all hours, day and night. All burglaries from a vehicle generally have one thing in common: personal belongings, such as purses, bags, clothing, laptops and other electronic devices, are left in vehicles. Keep in mind anything can be of value to a thief.
