TV Stations Seek Approval from MHSAA to Telecast/Stream High School Sports Live
The positive response to a May 2019 survey of MAB members asking if they would carry high school sports live or stream was overwhelmingly a YES. Background: The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Board of Directors established a policy decades ago that prohibits live television broadcasts of high school sporting events. With the plethora of media consumed by students and how savvy they have become, broadcasters feel the policy is no longer relevant. Read more

State Budget Talks Stalled
The Associated Press reported Wednesday (9/11) that budget talks between GOP Leaders and Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer have broken down in a dispute centered over how much to direct to roads and bridges in the coming fiscal year after the sides previously could not reach consensus on a tax hike to permanently boost the transportation budget.  Read More

Former Detroit Sportscaster Fred McLeod Passes
The Cleveland Cavaliers has reported that Fred McLeod, the voice of the Detroit Pistons for more than two decades, passed away Monday evening (9/9) at the age of 67.  Read More

On Wednesday, August 7, Radio Results Network held the grand opening for their new 21,000 square foot building in downtown Escanaba.  Read More

WLEN, WVAC and ACTV Team Up For Adrian College Sports
Longtime Adrian College sports radio broadcaster WLEN-FM (Adrian) is teaming up with two other media outlets this season to air Adrian College football, with the introduction of the Adrian College Sports Network.  Read More 

MI Press Association Invites MAB Members to Journalism Seminar
The Michigan Press Association has invited MAB members to attend a seminar titled "Diving in Deep: Reporting on water in Michigan," to be presented on October 22, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Deeb Conference Room in the MSU Communication Arts and Sciences Building in East Lansing. Read More

Great Lakes News (GLN), a syndicated news service with 45 radio affiliates in Michigan, is expanding its coverage of political news from the State Capitol in Lansing.  Read More

Two Flint-Saginaw Stations Appoint New News Directors
Gray Television has named Denise Killian as the new News Director at WJRT-TV. Killian most recently was News Director at KSNW-TV (Wichita, KS). At WEYI-TV,  Assistant New Director Neille-Ann Giffune has been promoted to News Director following the departure of Mike Schram.  Read More 

Bill Ballard, WDCQ-TV Founder, Dies at 90
William "Bill" Ballard, founder of WDCQ-TV in University Center died August 25 in Traverse City. He was 90. Ballard previously worked as director of broadcasting and TV station manager at Delta College, licensee of WDCQ.  Read More

Morrill Elected to SBE Board
After a month-long ballot process with its members, Saginaw-based Alpha Media Regional Director of Engineering Geary Morrill has been elected to a 2-year term on the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) Board of Directors.  Read More 

Big Rapids Radio Network Covers Three Local HS Teams This Fall
For over 30 years, Big Rapids High School sports have been broadcast live on stations now in the Big Rapids Radio Network. For the past 15 years the football has aired on WWBR-FM (Big Rapids), the Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball on WBRN-AM/FM (Big Rapids). Read More 

Walker Sisson Passes
The MAB shared the new on September 3 via the web that longtime Southwest Michigan contract engineer Walker Sisson passed away September 2 at the age of 71. Services were held on September 7.  Read More 

DPTV and WKAR Present Downton Abbey Movie Screenings
Both Detroit Public Television (DPTV/WTVS-TV) and WKAR Public Media (East Lansing) will be presenting advance screenings of the new Downton Abbey Movie for its viewers as a fundraiser.  Read More
