Local worship services remember George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery the Emanuel 9 & the disproportionate COVID losses for people of color

Faith communities help parishoners express anger, grieve losses, confess wrongs, and try to find a way forward. On Sunday, June 14, local ELCA congregations will dedicate their worship services to naming the pain of racial inequality.  Last August, the ELCA Churchwide Assembly passed a resolution asking all ELCA congregations to commemorate the Emanuel Nine yearly in mid-June. "Sometimes I do not remember to follow through on all of the resolutions passed at our national gatherings; but now, with George Floyd's murder and the rising global awareness, it seems vital for communities of faith to not be silent," commented Rev. Nancy Hanson.

The Emanuel 9 refers to the nine people who were murdered by a white supremacist while gathering for Bible study and prayer at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC on June 17, 2015.

Bethesda Lutheran Church in Bayfield, First in Port Wing, Immanuel in Cornucopia and Messiah in Washburn hold on-line worship services which can be found on church websites and Facebook pages.  Synodically Authorized Minister Mary Meriotto remarks, "We as white people need to continue to educate ourselves and be in conversation regarding the disparities OUR systems and institutions daily and unjustly burden people of color. We must listen carefully and act together to abolish the centuries of suffering and injustice."

St John's United Church of Christ on Madeline Island will also participate during their on-line June 14 worship service in solidarity with their ELCA siblings and in recognition of the many members of their church who also hold membership in ELCA churches when they are off the island.

Chequamegon Bay Universal Unitarian Fellowship faith leader Stacy Craig will be holding space for remembering, prayers and meditation at their next live service on June 28. ###

The First Salt Shaker Meal is a Big Hit!

Good morning Mary,
We had a good time last night. There were eight of us.  There were the Moellers; there was also Gina and Ed and Paul and I and Diane F. and Joyce Anderson. Of course it was a gorgeous night  First it seemed like it was going to be hot but it turned cool. We were in the shade most of the time and conversation was great. Everybody was involved. Everyone brought their food and utensils and everything and came well prepared. We did have a washing station if needed and of course the bathroom was clean.  Nobody needed that or anything else. We also had some ice water but everybody came complete with everything they needed. It's interesting, they asked me where the salt shaker meal name came from.  They were all perplexed by that. I said it was some thing that Diane had found and it was an interesting name so we might want to think about whether that speaks to what we're doing.

As I mentioned, Joyce Anderson was here. When Dianne Judd had called her, she had said no. When Jane Miller found that out she says I'm going to call her, and so she did and convinced her to come. It's interesting I think people need a little nudge and I think they need to feel comfortable. Joyce doesn't usually go to coffee hour so she probably didn't know what to expect. Jane and Jim said that they would pick her up and bring her over to our place. I think that extra nudge made a big difference.I called Diane to tell her what was going on so she didn't feel badly. I think it's important that even though we meet other people and so we don't know as well that sometimes that puts people off from feeling comfortable. Once she knew who is going to be here and then Jim and Jane would be with her she was very good and very happy to be here. Also Diane Fizell was enthusiastic she couldn't have been more fun. She thanked us and said she really really enjoyed herself.  I mentioned that hosts were needed so they might think about that.

Tired of Social Distancing and Zooming????
Introducing Salt Shaker Meals

WHO? Bethesda and Immanuel communities

WHAT?   A few of us have been thinking of how to socialize safely. So,
we will gather outdoors about 8 feet apart at one of our homes
for a meal. How does this work???

HOW? One or more of us will volunteer to host. The host does not
provide food! We would each (or each couple) bring our own
chairs, food, beverage, and utensils. We really want you to
participate!!! Let us know if you are interested in attending.
Each event will include about 8 people. No agenda-just having a
good time!

WHY? We all seem to be missing the "face to face" contact that we're
used to. We might be a distance apart, but we will at least have
spontaneous conversation. We hope you are interested in
this "best we can do" activity.

WHEN? We will to start in June. Inclement weather dates will be set.
When we get the list of participants, your host will contact
you by phone or e-mail.

Please call or e-mail the church  office to let us know if you are interested. 715-779-5611

The Southshore Quilters, based out of Immanuel Lutheran, are in dire need of bedsheets to use for backings on quilts. They certainly do not have to be new, but they should be clean.

In Search of used refrigerator.
As I was about to send this newsletter out I got a phone call from an elder who is in desperate need of a refrigerator.  If you have an extra one not in use that you are interested in donating or selling please call the church office.
