How Do Drops & Withdrawals Impact Financial Aid?

Drop_or_Withdraw_VideoThumbnail.png

Dropping or withdrawing from classes that you would otherwise fail can often save your GPA, but did you know that it can impact your financial aid?

There are several ways that making schedule changes can impact your financial aid:

  • If you drop classes before all of your financial aid has disbursed, then your financial aid awards will be adjusted to reflect your actual enrollment level.
  • If you drop classes and receive a refund of tuition and fees after your financial aid has disbursed, your financial aid awards will be adjusted to reflect your actual enrollment level and you may have to repay funds already received.
  • If you withdraw from classes, the "W" that you earn counts as credits that were attempted but not completed. This impacts your SAP (see below). In addition, many scholarships such as the Hathaway scholarship, the LCCC Presidential Scholarship, and the LCCC Deans Scholarship, require you to have completed a certain number of credits by the end of the academic year, so withdrawing may mean you lose future scholarship eligibility.
  • If you completely withdraw from all of your classes, you may be subject to a "Return of Title IV" calculation for your federal financial aid. (All federal financial aid is Title IV aid). This may mean that you will owe most or all of your financial aid back to LCCC, even though you will also still be responsible for the total cost of your tuition and fees.

If you are considering dropping or withdrawing from any classes, it is always a good idea to talk to both your Academic Advisor and the Student Hub to get a full picture of how it could impact your future progress and financial aid eligibility at LCCC.

SAP: Your Financial Aid "Report Card"

At the end of each semester, your financial aid status is checked to ensure that you are meeting SAP - Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Your SAP Status determines your eligibility for financial aid for future semesters.

In general, SAP requires that you have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher; have passed 67% of all the credits you have attempted (rather than failing or withdrawing); and have not exceeded the maximum number of allowable credits for your degree type.

Some types of financial aid (such as the Hathaway scholarship) have additional or more stringent SAP requirements in addition to these.

You'll get an email in late December to let you know your SAP Status.

  • Good Standing: Great! You are meeting SAP requirements
  • Warning: You aren't meeting SAP requirements. You get one "warning semester", where you will still receive financial aid, to improve your SAP
  • No Longer Eligible: You are not meeting SAP requirements and are not eligible for financial aid at this time. You may be able to appeal.
