Building a Foundation for the Future
Letter from Dr. Luft
Dear Putnam Valley Community,

On Thursday, November 11, we observed Veterans Day. As the oldest of four brothers raised in Putnam Valley, I have had many opportunities to assume the role of the proud older brother; mostly on the sports fields and courts in and around Putnam Valley. However, one of my proudest moments had nothing to do with athletics, academics, or the arts; it was attending my brother Jayson’s graduation from Parris Island, the day he became a U.S. Marine.

Each year as Veterans Day approaches, I am reminded of the great pride my family and I felt that day and for the many years of service he provided this great nation. My family always takes time to reach out and thank him for his service each Veterans Day. I am hopeful that I’m teaching my two boys to respect and honor those who serve our country.

It is my hope that everyone in our community was able to take the opportunity to thank a military veteran for their service. The pictures and names of many of Putnam Valley’s military veterans line the sides of Peekskill Hollow Road, Oscawana Lake Road, and along Morrissey Drive (my brother is the second on the right). These banners have quickly become a source of great pride within our community, and I am hopeful they will continue to grow in numbers over the coming years.

While there may be division within our country, state, and even our town, Veterans Day often provides an opportunity to come together and support a common cause by letting our military veterans know how much they are appreciated.

Thank you to all of our Putnam Valley residents and alumni who have served.
Sincerely,

Dr. Jeremy Luft

PVES Ranked 103 of All Elementary Schools in NYS!
We are thrilled to announce that Putnam Valley Elementary School was ranked #103 in New York elementary schools by U.S. News and World Report out of 2,831 schools. Elementary schools in New York are ranked on their performance in measures such as state-required tests, graduation rates, and student-teacher ratio.

Dr. Luft expressed his pride in this news, adding, "It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teachers and staff at the Elementary School, and proof that, despite all odds, our colleagues put our students First and Foremost always."
Middle School Welcomes First Responders!
We had our First Responders and Apparatus Event at PVMS on Thursday, November 28th. A tremendous thank you to the Putnam Valley Ambulance Corps, Putnam Valley Fire Department, Putnam County Emergency Response Team, Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, Putnam County SWAT team, Westchester County Police for flying in their helicopter, Westchester County Special Operations Division and New York State Police with their K-9 officers. We couldn’t have asked for a better turn out as it was wonderful to see some of our former students. Our hope is to continue this as a yearly tradition.
PV Science Research is Looking for Mentors!
Check out the student presentations at our recent board meeting
Science Research is a 3-year elective where students self select a research topic and then complete original research under the guidance of a mentor. A mentor could be anyone with research experience (typically engineer or PhD) who can help the student complete the research over junior and senior years. Many students have won local, regional, and international competitions and even been published. This past year, even with the pandemic shutting down many labs, our students did experiments online or at home and competed in different competitions, We have 11 students compete in JSHS, and we sent 4 students to the state championships. At the International Genius Olympiad, we had 7 students win awards. Also at WESEF, one of the biggest competitions in the country this past year, we had 7 students place out of 500 competitors from all over Putnam, Westchester, and Rockland counties. The current sophomores presented at the BOE meeting and stated their research topics. If anyone is interested in possibly mentoring or may know someone who could mentor, please reach out to Mr. Jerry Zupan via jzupan@pvcsd.org.

Attention HS Students and Parents:
Check Out Passport for Good!
Our school will no longer be using Volunteer Access to record PVHS community service hours.  All student hours previously earned and logged into Volunteer Access have been automatically transferred to our new system, called P4G, or PASSPORT 4 GOOD. P4G is a NEW and EASIER system to document community service hours and club participation for college resumes. P4G accounts have been set up for each student. In order to log in to P4G, please watch this 5-minute video by clicking "Learn More." This video will give specific directions for logging in and using the platform. Once you log in, students will be able to access clubs to join.

Students can contact Club Advisors, Grade Level Advisors, Counselors, Mrs. Orefice, Mr. Mello, or Dr. Sepe with any questions.
