CALIFORNIA JUDGES ASSOCIATION SAYS
FAIR, UNBIASED, AND IMPARTIAL JUSTICE FOR ALL

(SACRAMENTO, CA - June 10, 20)  Hon. B. Tam Nomoto Schumann, President of the California Judges Association issues the following statement:

" The events of the past two weeks in the United States have been very troubling. Those of us fortunate to serve our society as judicial officers are no less affected by these events.

As we begin the process of reopening our courts during the COVID-19 pandemic, the judiciary remains committed to the basic principles underlying our Constitutions; that all who appear before us will be treated with fairness and dignity, and that every litigant will receive fair, unbiased, and impartial justice.

Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye noted that we each take an oath to protect and defend our United States and California Constitutions. As judicial officers and CJA members, we will continue to uphold the rights guaranteed to each and every person.

CJA and its members promise that we will continue to work to preserve the integrity of the judiciary so that all persons, regardless of race, color, gender, creed, sexual orientation or identity, will be confident that they will receive equal justice and that they will be heard. CJA is therefore establishing a Task Force on the Elimination of Bias and Inequality in Our Justice System which will identify sources of bias and inequality with recommendations for the appropriate actions necessary to eradicate them.

"Justice For All" must be a reality in our California court system, not just a promise."
