An MLK Sunday Breakfast with Rabbi Capers Funnye
Sunday, January 19th, 9:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. 
Congregation Beth Shalom, 14601 Lincoln Street, Oak Park, MI
Join us in welcoming Rabbi Capers Funnye, leader of Chicago's African American synagogue, as he gives insight into having overlapping identities and honors the legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. A light breakfast will be served.  
 
This event is being held in partnership with JCRC/AJC, Congregation T'chiyah, Congregation Or Chadash, Congregation Beth Shalom, Kehillat Etz Chayim, Temple Emanu-El, and Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue.
 
 
Second Annual MLK Interfaith Celebration 
Monday, January 20th, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 pm.
Second Baptist Church, 441 Monroe Street, Detroit, MI
Join us for our Second Annual MLK Interfaith Celebration in partnership with Second Baptist Church and Old St. Mary's Church. We will be coming together in collaboration and commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and work.

We invite you to an afternoon filled with a musical performance by DSA Choir, a historical presentation led by Keynote Speaker Reverend Joseph B. Samples III, and a luncheon. During the luncheon, we will be leading attendees through a deep-dive reflection on the social injustices facing us in modern times. As we reflect and address our modern day injustices, we encourage folks to work together to create a sustainable path towards active engagement, peace, and community collaboration.

Free and validated parking available at any of the Greektown Casino parking facilities or the Brush Street Garage (1001 Brush Street, Detroit, MI) -credit/debit card required to enter.
   
 
Detroit Family Tu B'Shvat Seder
Sunday, February 2nd, 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue 
Join Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue, Dor Hadash, and our Detroit families for our   Tu B'Shvat Family Program as we celebrate the birthday of the trees! This event is open to families with kids of all ages, as we will explore the Jewish holiday of Tu B'Shvat through an interactive Tu B'Shvat Seder, hands on activities, a Tu B'Shvat tasting, and so much more.  (This will be a nut free program)

Join with Hazon Detroit, the JCC of Metro Detroit, and 16 synagogues from across the denominational spectrum for Judaism's most arboreal holiday, as we celebrate the trees, learn about the climate, and gather together to embody and envision a healthier and more sustainable world for all. 
There will be a light, kosher, holiday-themed dinner, in addition to the ritual foods and wine that are traditionally enjoyed at the seder.  

All food and wine will be vegetarian and kosher. There will be dairy-free and gluten-free options available. Handleman Hall is ADA accessible. Please reach out to Hannah with any other accessibility needs that you need Hazon to accommodate.

Second Annual Motown Lip Sync Battle!
 
Are you ready to sing your heart out? Look no further... we are thrilled to announce the Second Annual Motown Lip Sync Battle the evening of Saturday, February 29th, held in partnership with Breakers Covenant Church International. 
 
We are going to celebrate our shared love of Motown music in the city that started it all! Our communities will form collaborative teams and we expect the competition to be fierce in our quest to honor diversity and the beauty of the city of Detroit and its music. We hope that you'll join us in this collaborative endeavor!. We will perform 4-5 songs/team.

New Shabbat Traditions with the
Downtown Synagogue   
 
 
We invite you to join us as we continue to expand our Shabbat traditions. We will be holding Sleep In Shabbats on the third Saturday of the monthSleep - In   Shabbat ?! You heard right. Don't worry about getting up early- we will all be getting a late start. Join us as we kick off  Shabbat  morning with a delicious brunch starting at 10:30 a.m., and mincha services beginning at 12:00 p.m.  
 
Dates of Sleep-In Shabbat:  
  • Saturday, January 18th
  • Saturday, February 15th
All are welcome at our Musical Kabbalat Shabbats led by musician and music educator Gavri Yares, held on the first Friday of the month.        
 
Dates of upcoming Musical Kabbalat Shabbats:

  • Friday, March 6th

Children's Books for DPSCD students 
 
We are very excited to announce a new partnership with Detroit Public Schools Community District, as part of our membership within the DPSCD Faith-Based Council. We have been paired with Palmer Park Preparatory Academy with the goal of supporting the students, teachers, and staff in the ways that best serve the community.  
 
We are now accepting donations of children's books in fair to good condition. All books will be donated to Palmer Park Preparatory Academy, and will be placed in classrooms that are in need of more books. We hope you will join us in this new endeavor of further supporting our community!
 
Donations may also be made during Friday and Saturday Shabbats- a donation bin is placed in our foyer in front of the elevator.

Volunteer opportunities at the Downtown Synagogue! 
  • Read at Palmer Preparatory Academy: We are officially part of the Detroit Public Schools Community District's Faith-Based Council, and have been paired with Palmer Prep Academy! Volunteers will read to various grade levels during school hours, taking part in the new Let's Read initiative! Volunteer opportunities will begin in the fall. Please reach out to Nicole if you would like more information.

We invite members to share the name and Yahrzeit of your loved ones with us.
 
Our membership form provides space for you to include Yahrzeit information to honor your loved one's memory. If you are not currently a member, you may access our membership form here, complete the general information, and fill in the Yahrzeit information.
 
If you are a current member, you may submit your loved one's Yahrzeit information to Liz. Please include English name, Hebrew name, English date of death (before or after sundown) and Hebrew date of death. We understand that you may not have complete information, so please include what information you do have.
 
We invite you to worship with us and say Kaddish during the Yahrzeit of your loved ones
 
Yahrzeit reminders will be sent to Synagogue members in advance of the month of the specific Shabbat date when the yahrzeit is observed. Beginning in the spring, we will send an email notification to remind you of Yahrzeits of loved ones whose names will be read at the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue.

Call for Mi Shebeirach
During our Shabbat morning worship, we read the names of people in our community who are in need of healing. As we invoke God's blessing, we also become more aware of the people who could use a little extra care. Please let us know if you would like us to read the name of a loved one.

Help Us Cook!
We're always seeking volunteers to help us in the kitchen! We pride ourselves on our delicious home cooked Shabbat meals. If you want to contribute to the synagogue by cooking, please contact our office to get on the schedule.

Clean House!
As we work to clean up and clear out in our Synagogue, we ask your cooperation. If you notice a spill, please wipe it up. If you drop crumbs, please clean them up. If you use the kitchen, please clean up. If you have extra papers or handouts, please take them home to recycle them. Just a reminder: please no food or drinks (other than water) are allowed on the 2nd floor. As we continue to create our welcoming communal home, please help us to keep it inviting. As the saying goes, "it takes a village."

Liven up your weekly routine by joining us to welcome Shabbat. In the midst of busy schedules and tantalizing local events, Friday nights at IADS remain a signature weekly rhythm. Whether you have joy you wish to share in song or you are feeling in the mood to just be quietly present, we have a place reserved just for you. Services at 7:00 pm followed by a deliciously prepared Kosher vegetarian dinner. End your hectic work week with ruach and community.

Where would Jews be without the Torah? Torah is the center of our Saturday Shabbat service. It is a mitzvah to make a minyan so we can read the Torah and people can say kaddish. Please come to the Saturday morning Shabbat service at 10:00. We want to pass the Torah l'dor vador.
