Rector's Ramblings

You can't plan for everything, but you can plan for a lot! That's what I keep telling myself, anyway. Donna jokes that I have a knack for thinking of all the things that might go wrong. And I do. Not in a pessimistic way, mind you, just in an analytical way. I don't anticipate everything, but I do tend to think several steps down the road. This is why I think I have been a good team player with our hurricane planning.  Our small group (Alice and Fred Barlow, Glenn Queener, and I) is pretty good about running down a list of what-ifs, as we learned recently when we put our brand new plan to the test for Dorian.

Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult  Sunday  Class  has begun a new study entitled  The Gospel According to Leviticus . Read more about this book  here . All are invited to join us. The class meets in the Adult Sunday classroom in the Parish House. For more information, contact Bob Brown at [email protected] .
Women's Book Study
The women's study group meets on Thursdays at 1:00 pm in the parish hall.
The group is discussing  Learning to Walk in the Dark,  by Barbara Brown Taylor.  In this book,  Taylor asks us to put aside our fears and anxieties and to explore all that God has to teach us "in the dark". Through darkness we find courage, we understand the world in new ways, and we feel God's presence around us, guiding us through things seen and unseen. Often, it is while we are in the dark that we grow the most. With her characteristic charm and literary wisdom, Taylor is our guide through a spirituality of the nighttime, teaching us how to find our footing in times of uncertainty and giving us strength and hope to face all of life's challenging moments. Books are available in the bookstore for $11.00.  Contact: Mtr. Ashton Williston at [email protected] .
Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group, which meets on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am, has resumed meeti ng for the fall. For more information, please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .
Wednesday Afternoon Book Study
Formed In Love Study  - Wednesdays in September, with a simple lunch and one-hour discussion

On Wednesdays, at 1:00 pm, Fr. Tom is leading a four-week discussion of Scott Bader-Saye's volume from the New Church Teaching Series,  Formed by Love . Bader-Saye examines the moral life through the lens of the Episcopal Church and its traditions. Topics include creation, incarnation, holiness, sacrament, scripture, and "via media." The author also tackles the big moral questions: Who am I? Why am I here? What are good and evil? What are right and wrong? - and examines how an Episcopal approach might shape a typical day by examining Morning Prayer and Compline as moral formation, in between discussing work,  eating, and playing. Books are $13 and available in the bookstore. Contact: Fr. Tom at [email protected]

Parish Picnic

The threat of rain and the very real presence of lots of biting insects may have moved our parish picnic indoors, but the spirit of fun and fellowship was not diminished in the least! From the delicious meal of hamburgers, hot dogs and tasty sides, to dessert accompanied by a staff musical performance and Father Tom's corny jokes, a good time was had by all! Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make this such an enjoyable event. See all the fun pictures  here!
