Reduced Cost Ethics Training for Professional Engineers
To help our members meet their requirements, the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers has launched a new online ethics training for professional engineers at a reduced cost.
This two-hour online video, presented by the NJSPE counsel Larry Powers, will provide you with the two credits required for the ethics portion of your professional engineer license. Once the video is viewed in its entirety, you will be e-mailed a certificate proving you have met this licensing requirement.

NSPE Fellow Membership Grade
Nomination Deadline: March 1
The NSPE Fellow Program is a national program intended to recognize deserving professional engineers who have demonstrated long term professional service at the chapter, state and national levels of NSPE. The NSPE Board of Directors established the Fellow recognition program to honor those licensed members who have demonstrated exemplary service to the profession, the Society, and the community.
Fellow nominations may be submitted to the NSPE Council of Fellows Executive Committee (COFEC) by a state society of NSPE, a NSPE Interest Group, a NSPE Chartered Affinity Group or, a member of the NSPE Board of Directors with the NSPE Board's endorsement. NSPE Interest Groups are defined as the five Legacy Interest Groups defined in Bylaw 21 and Chartered Affinity Groups are defined as organizations with which NSPE has a written affinity group agreement (currently the National Academy of Forensic Engineers and the National Academy of Building Inspection Engineers. These definitions may be expanded over time if interest groups and chartered affinity groups are added.

NJ Future City Competition Urgently Needs YOU!
Future City is a student outreach activity in New Jersey that brings together the education community, local engineering alumni, engineering firms and various professional societies. In recent years the region competition has grown to over 500 participating students, teachers, and mentors. Feedback from both students and teachers has been exceedingly positive, with exclamations of an excellent engineering experience!
Future City's mission is to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program for 6th, 7th & 8th grade students that combine a stimulating engineering challenge with a "hands-on" application to present their vision of a city of the future. This year's Challenge is: "Clean Water: Tap Into Tomorrow." Teams identify a threat to their future city's water supply and design a resilient system to ensure a reliable supply.

MATHCOUNTS
Each year, the NJSPE's Education Foundation sponsors the NJ MATHCOUNTS events
throughout the state. The Competition Series is for middle school students grades 6 - 8. It
consists of school competitions with the winners moving on to regional and then state
competitions. The national competition was held in Orlando in May.The MATHCOUNTS motto is "Some students love math. Other students fear math. MATHCOUNTS is a place for both." Trump administration to accelerate environmental reviews for infrastructure projects
The Trump administration is proposing a new rule to modernize and accelerate environmental reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) so that infrastructure can be built in "a timely, efficient, and affordable manner," the White House announced. The proposed rule would establish time limits of two years for completion of environmental impact statements and one year for completion of environmental assessments. The White House says the rule would "reduce unnecessary burdens and delays for environmental reviews." Critics of the proposed rule have raised concerns that the changes to NEPA lack consideration for the impacts of infrastructure projects on climate change.

As Congress gears up to produce a new water resources bill, a batch of proposed Army Corps of Engineers flood control, dredging, river locks and ecosystem restoration projects is getting in line to be included in the not-yet-drafted legislation. The list may greatly exceed the total in the last such measure. Since the previous Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) was signed into law on Dec. 16, 2018, the Army's chief of engineers, Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, has signed reports recommending 17 projects, valued at $9 billion in all, he told the House water resources and environment subcommittee at a Jan. 9 hearing.

2020 hopeful Buttigieg touches on infrastructure plan
Former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg unveiled a plan to pour more than $1 trillion into creating millions of jobs and updating U.S. infrastructure with an eye toward fending off the effects of climate change. The 17-page plan calls for working with states, cities and local governments to build sustainable infrastructure that also builds "opportunity, equity, and empowerment." Buttigieg's plan says it would prioritize connecting people with jobs and resources. He would double the Transportation Department's BUILD grant program, which funds a wide variety of infrastructure projects, to $2 billion a year.

There are obvious differences between barbers and professional engineers, but many state politicians have begun to classify the two together. Since the start of 2016, 31 states have introduced legislation and/or regulations that would erode and even destroy PE licensure as we know it today, all in the name of allegedly creating greater competition. NSPE is fighting to ensure that the licensed practice of professional engineering is considered a learned profession and that the engineering license is treated like a medical license. We live in a fast-paced, ever changing world in which professional engineering is constantly growing and evolving. Public policy, established through legislation, regulations, or litigation, are shaping the ability of professional engineers to practice. The profession is constantly facing new and growing challenges and opportunities.

This NSPE report, entitled The Future of Professional Engineering: Continued Protection of the Public Health, Safety and Welfare Through Professional Engineering Licensure, was developed by a team of volunteers appointed to the NSPE Future of Professional Engineering ("FOPE") Task Force of the National Society of Professional Engineers ("NSPE") from June 2016 to July 2018 and presents a discussion of a range of issues that are expected to impact professional engineers and professional engineering in the coming decades - emerging technologies, industrial exemptions, public policy, engineering education, globalization, alternative project delivery, the role of engineering technicians/technologists, public sector engagement and other critical issues.
