Hello All,
At Home
Other than a week in July with Mark and Crissi at The Happy Dog Ranch in Littleton CO, I’ve been here at home since June. We’re so fortunate to have an incredibly talented group of Instructors, Coaches and Mentors as it has given me a chance to enjoy some time at home horsing around, flying, and being a normal person;
|
|
and keep up with what’s going on here at home, in the office.
This will give you an idea of what October and November look like…

Certification Completion Course
Our Advanced 5-Day Course students have been giving me excellent feedback on our Instructors (even better than MY courses!). I’ve spent much of the summer making improvements to our Field Work Program. Field Work Students are rolling forward on that, and I’ll be teaching twelve Certification Completion Course students here in Fairfield, next week.

The UK
Trip to the UK begins on Sept 28
th
. One highlight involves a collaboration with Mark Rashid and Crissi McDonald, for the first time on that side of the pond. We will be doing a
Considering the Horse: Mind and Body clinic
together in Cambridgeshire, on October 15-17. These are very educational clinics during which we evaluate movement and biomechanics of the ridden horse before bodywork, and then again after the bodywork, followed by a lesson under saddle with Mark.
The cool thing is that when you put what Mark has to offer, together with what I have to offer, the total is more than the sum of the parts. And even cooler is that both Mark and I learn with every horse, and we get to share what we learn with the participants. While this course is “gettin’ purty full”, there are still spectator/
auditor spots available
.
Following that, I’m looking forward to re-uniting with Mark and Morag Higgins (whom I met at our “Brain Clinic” in Colorado), when we have our Beyond Horse Massage Weekend Seminar at their place in
South Lanarkshire, Scotland on October 19 and 20.
Mark and Morag have been collaborating with Mark Rashid and Crissi at
Ross Dhu Equestrian
for years.
Among other things, Mark and Morag work with veterans, and their Equido system of training is similar to Mark Rashid’s. Among the “among other things”, you might catch Mark Higgins doing Masterson Method on furrier clients in the Highlands of Scotland.
|
|
One more cool thing; Mark Rashid will be doing an Aibado (Aikido for Horseman) clinic in Brockenhurst on October 10-12, and another one at Ross Dhu Equestrian Center in South Lankarshire on October 22-24, immediately following my Weekend Seminar there.
We still have a couple of spots open on the Weekend Seminar, so if you’re looking for an interesting (and educational, of course) time, you’ll find it here.

Equine Affair in MA!
It’s been a few years, but it looks like I’ll be back at
Equine Affaire
in Springfield, Massachusetts this November 7 to 10. We’ll have a booth there where we can talk about horses, books, DVDs and bad jokes. I’ll be doing demos on Thursday and Friday; come watch and visit. Will also be visiting with our wonderful publisher, Trafalgar Square - Horse and Rider Books at Equine Affaire.
Farther east… or west???
On to Australia and New Zealand in November...

|
|
The following week I’ll be at
Equitana New Zealand
for the first time, and doing a Weekend Seminar in NZ for the first time. The Seminar’s full, but I now have two new talented Instructors in New Zealand; Anna Drabble and Nadine Vollmerg, so we’ll be having more Seminars in New Zealand in the future!
Back to Australia. MM Instructor Pam Martin will be teaching a
Weekend Seminar
at Andrew and Nicky Bowe’s Mayfield Barehoofcare Rehabilitation Center in Yarck, VIC on November 23 and 24, and I’ll show up to teach an
Advanced 5-Day Course
the following five days, from November 25 to 29. If you’re interested in doing a Weekend and Advanced Course together, now’s your chance.
On to Cape Town
Will be stopping off in South Africa on the way home to teach a final Certification Completion Course to our dedicated Field Work students in Johannesburg, and I’ll be teaching my first
Weekend Seminar in Cape Town
. This one’s just been put on the Calendar.
Then home (Whew!)

If you’re not exhausted after reading this, take a look at some interesting things we have below; videos, stories, sneaky sales, and other fun stuff.
My next newsletter will be from England, in which I’ll update you on the antics there.
Until then, like me,
Enjoy your horses!

Masterson Method Field Work student, Tomoko Sembongi, wrote
about The Masterson Method in the latest

This issue featured horse care for horse owners, so Tomoko shared the Bladder Meridian Technique with readers.
Wonderful job, Tomoko!!!
MMCP,
Asako Miyajima,
will be writing an article for Japanese Horse magazine's next issue. Great job for getting out there Asako and Tomoko!

"Wanted to share a Masterson win, hoping this is the right place.
I was at an endurance competition this weekend and a fellow rider on a 25-mile ride came in with her horse for the last vet check and he was showing signs of lameness. She had 1 hour to get him stretched in order to complete.
I used what I learned in Masterson and got him to release the tension in his hind end. After about 30 minutes of work, she was back with the vet. Not only did the vet say he looked perfect but was cleared to ride again that day.
He completed a total of 50 miles. Without what I learned at my clinic, I wouldn’t have been able to help as I did and Jack and his rider might not have finished the ride in great condition.
So, sending this to say thanks!" -Shannon Thorndyke, Beyond Horse Massage Weekend Seminar Participant

MMES/MMCP Dawn Rick Partners to Make a Difference
Dawn Rick, MMCP and MMES, has been working with the director of Inspiration Stables in Worthington, Iowa. They offer equine-assisted
learning activities. Last month, Dawn offered a session for the parents of participants: she offered one hour of groundwork, followed by an hour of the Masterson Method Bladder Meridian Technique. Dawn reported how powerful the connections became once they learned the principles of Search-Response-Stay-Release:
They really enjoyed it and had a much better understanding of working with the horses and understanding why their kids become attached to horses. That’s what really caught me, because at first they were struggling with leading and not connecting with the horse. With Bladder Meridian, they really started creating a connection with the horse. They realized their touch was actually helping the horse release tension.
She and the director are hoping to do more with parents next year, as well as serving different populations, such as people with MS, and showing the volunteers how to practice SRSR with the Bladder Meridian Technique. Inspiration Stables is new - this is just their 2nd year!
Thank you Dawn for making a difference at Inspiration Stables!

Find a MMES Training Host Near You
Our 2020 calendar is looking a little sparse. Do you volunteer or work at an equine-assisted learning or therapy program that you think would be a great location for a future MMES training? Consider reaching out to the equine manager and/or program director to share about The Masterson Method and to see if they’d be interested in hosting. Perhaps you can reach out to an area MMCP to offer a demo? If the facility is interested, you can send them to
Host a MMES Training
or have them reach out to our MMES Coordinator at

About MMES
The Masterson Method Equine Specialist specializes in sharing specific light touch Masterson Method techniques with persons served in equine-assisted learning and therapy programs. By doing this bodywork on horses, participants deepen their connection with horses while also gaining self-awareness and self-regulation skills; meanwhile, therapy horses are tended to through simple bodywork and learn a new way of relating to people. It's a win/win!

New Certified Practitioners

Paula Marks
South Molton, United Kingdom
Paula has been around horses since she can remember. They have remained her main passion, doing pony club and British Horse Society stages at school.
After purchasing an ex-race horse which had kissing spine and serious stress issues, a friend and trainer suggested looking at Masterson Method, so she had Julie Green come out. She was so amazed by the results and changes that it set her off on the journey to become a certified practitioner.
"With all my horses I've seen positive improvement, not only performance, but stress and arthritic issues, and learning to connect with them better as a owner. I compete in different disciplines and just love seeing what they can achieve, in what they enjoy doing. I also groom at some larger events."
Devon area but happy to travel.

Ruth Drimer
Leeds, United Kingdom
Ruth has had a love of horses from a very early age and rode competitively as a child, both side saddle and astride. She trained as a BHSAI, worked as a groom for hunters and eventers, and as an instructor, before retraining as a nurse.
She continued to teach part time and became very interested in rider biomechanics and centred riding techniques. Taking on a mare with physical and emotional issues led her to explore natural horsemanship techniques. This made her understand just how sensitive horses can be and how easy it can be to misinterpret their attempts to tell us they are in pain and discomfort.
Already a human lymphatic massage therapist, she trained as an equine sports massage therapist however she always felt that she was doing to the horse rather than working with them, as she liked to do when she trained, but after a longstanding shoulder injury and subsequent surgery left her with limited movement, she was recommended somatic movement by a friend. Like Masterson, this allowed her to understand how to release the tension in her own body in order to increase movement. This worked so well on her own body, when she tried out the 2-Day Masterson weekend, she was totally hooked!
Ruth loves the way the Masterson ethos of reading the horse and allowing them to find and release in their bodies, fits in perfectly with the way she trains and teaches horsemanship.
Her focus, now, is in on bodywork first, as she has found that so many times a training issue is actually the horse trying to tell us they are in discomfort in the only way they know how!
