January 2020

Introducing... the first ever Manufacturer's Edge baby!! It's hard to believe, but we have never had a baby announcement in our newsletter before. Suffice it to say, we are beyond excited to welcome baby Diana Reese Martin into the Manufacturer's Edge family. Born on December 20th at 5:30 pm, this sweet little bundle of joy was welcomed into the world by her mother Karen Zrebiec, our Sales & Delivery Coordinator, and her husband Ian Martin. Mom, baby, and Dad are all doing well, spending lots of time snuggling, and sending tons of pictures to the team.

Congratulations to Karen and Ian and welcome to the world, baby Diana!

isoManufacturer's Edge Partners with
Cavendish Scott to Offer ISO Trainings in 2020
Manufacturer's Edge and our trusted partners at Cavendish Scott, who have been serving our clients' ISO needs for many years, are offering a variety of ISO-related training opportunities starting with a week-long IRCA ISO 9001:2015 - Lead Auditor Training in November.

The workshops are IRCA (International Register of Certified Auditors) 40-hour courses recognized widely by auditor registration organizations including Exemplar Global. The training is administered by the team from Cavendish Scott and is necessary for all registrar auditors and essential to those involved in implementing, maintaining or auditing a quality management system - especially those who are required to interact with ISO 9000:2015 registrars and auditors.

If you are familiar with the costs associated obtaining ISO certification, you will want to take advantage of this opportunity to save a sizable amount of investment. The cost to attend is $2,250 per participant, which represents a significant savings in and of itself. Additionally, we are offering a 10% to companies who register 3 or more participants.

Date: February 24 - 28, 2020
Time: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
(Breakfast, lunch, and all materials provided)
Location: Geotech Environmental Equipment

The consultants and training professionals at Cavendish Scott are the lead industry experts on all things ISO-related. You don't want to miss this opportunity to learn from the best.

simplycyberSimply Cyber (vol 23): Cyber Saber-Rattling

Jennifer Kurtz, Cyber Program Director, Manufacturer's Edge
Only three days into our shiny new decade and we saw the take-down of a political strongman in Iran, an uptick in nation-state cyber (and other political) activity, and then a brief stand down from heightened alert warnings. And now Iranian leadership is blaming the US for Iran's launch of a surface-to-air missile that downed a Ukrainian Air Lines jet with 176 non-combat people on board on January 12. It feels to me as though we are stuck in a tragic time loop, a non-comedic parallel to the 1993 movie, Groundhog Day, in which the main character relives events until he slowly grasps the inevitability of consequences and takes remediatory (redemptive?) action.

We often fall into a similar, circular behavior pattern with cybersecurity program implementation, taking a wait-and-see approach, looking for shadows and signs to determine whether we really, really need to adopt basic recommended security controls. Will the groundhog see its shadow and go back in the hole for another six weeks? Will DFARS 7012 compliance be based largely on the 110 NIST SP 800-171 security requirements, even when the final version of DoD's Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification details are published? All signs point to yes. And the recent DHS cyber warnings, triggered by concerns about Iranian retaliation and cyber saber-rattling, also point to a "yes" for implementing a solid system security plan (SSP), corrective plan of action and milestones (POAM), and incident response and recovery plan (IRP).

Iran has a highly sophisticated cadre of cyber professionals, some of whom have reverse-engineered the Stuxnet malware that compromised some 1,000 centrifuges in Iran's Natanz nuclear enrichment facility in 2010. The original malware gave the world a disturbing look into the power of digital tools to disrupt critical infrastructure managed by industrial control systems. Learning from the Stuxnet malware contributed to the development of Triton malware (used against a Saudi Arabian target in December 2017), which targets industrial control systems (ICS) in production equipment and, more specifically, the automated safety mechanisms that protect human machine operators against physical injury and even death. [i] Concern that Iran could deploy some form of cyber retaliation against US manufacturing assets follows logically. (...)

The State Trade Expansion Program (STEP)  is a financial assistance program for aspiring and current Colorado exporters entering into a new global market. The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade is now accepting applications for companies looking to attend the Hannover Messe trade show.

The Hannover Messe trade show  is the world's largest and most influential trade fair for industrial technology held from April 20-24, 2020 in Hannover, Germany .

Through STEP, Colorado advanced manufacturing, energy, hydrogen fuel cells and robotics companies have the opportunity to connect with foreign buyers and increase their presence in the European market, resulting in export sales and job creation and retention in Colorado.

The state will sponsor a Colorado Pavilion in the Hydrogen Fuel Cell area that will showcase up to six companies to promote Colorado's advanced manufacturing industry. If your company would like to attend in a different Hall, you can apply through the STEP General Application.

Awarded companies will receive a travel stipend of up to $3,500 and exhibit space in the Colorado Pavilion.

The application is due January 24, 2020 . For additional information, please contact Nicole Gunkle at   [email protected] with questions.

If your company is interested in attending another trade show, you can apply through the STEP General Application for funding which is open year-round.
camaThe CAMA Conversation
by Dave Jeffrey, Chair of the Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Association

Dave Jeffrey, CEO & Owner, JPM Prototype & Mfg, Inc.
In my mind, Henry Ford is an icon in manufacturing. I heard a quote from him today that I had not heard before, "whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right". This quote speaks volumes to the success of the Ford Motor Company.

Much of our success is determined by our attitude and once our attitude is set, we need to put forth the effort to be the best we can.

In addition to attitude, Ford surrounded himself with people who knew he could succeed, he also said, "my best friend is the one who brings out the best in me".

2020 is a new year and a new decade. What does your attitude look like, who are you surrounding yourself with, and which successes will you have? For years, I have surrounded myself with those who can help me succeed, those in my community, the state, as well as organizations like CAMA, Manufacturer's Edge, the Chambers and EDC, and many others. I do not do this because I have extra time on my hands, but because I know who will help me be successful.

I fully understand that we are all busy, but just because someone is busy does not mean they are successful. In this new decade, consider how you can find success, what your attitude will be, and who best to surround yourself with.

I see the 2020s as a great time to be in manufacturing as well as a great time to expand and grow with the help of those who can push me to succeed.
