PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Ladies,

It was nice to see everyone at our first Club Day of the new season. Thank you to Lauri Weiser, our new Program Chair, for booking such a dynamic speaker!

October is Grant Applications month. The applications can be downloaded straight from our website. Please encourage your favorite non-profit to apply. As always, applications are due October 31st.

We are also accepting applications for our House Manager position.  Please keep in mind that this is a live-in situation.  The ideal candidate must be someone who is fastidious, knows how to clean and is available on weekends to open up for renters. This person would be able to have a regular M-F, 9-5 job outside of the Club, since our Office Manager is on the premises M-F, 9-4 pm, to open up for weekday rentals. Please see me or email me if you know of someone who would like a job description and an application.

Things to remember for  October:

Please get your membership renewals in before October 1st.  Robin Clark will have our new member directories at our October Club Day so if she doesn't have you as an active member, you will not be in our 2019-20 directory.

Join Audrey Rabinowitz on October 20th at Sherwood Island Park to participate in the  Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, at 9:30 am.  Our team name is "Westport Woman's Club."  Members and their families can now go online to register as a walker and/or to make a donation.

We are still accepting clothing for our  Clothing Sale (until October 18). The sale will be held from October 25-27. Please tell your friends and post on social media.

All My Best,

Christina McVaney

Time:     11:30 am
Where:   Bedford Hall

Plan to join us on Monday, October 7, for Club Day, which will be hosted by our Community Services women, chaired by Donna Richardson and the Book Review group led by Pat Vezendy.   Please be sure to make your reservation with Elizabeth by 1:00 pm on Wednesday, October 2 .

This year's caterer, Aux Delices, will be serving a light and fluffy Spinach and Mushroom Quiche, accompanied by an Arugula Salad with Oranges and Fennel. Parker House Rolls with Butter will be available. Dessert will be Chocolate Torte with Chantilly Cream. Don't you think that will be a delicious luncheon? Aux Delices never fails to impress us with their yummy offerings.

If you have a serious food allergy, please let me know by Wednesday, October 2. If you need to cancel a reservation, please do so by Wednesday, October 2, to avoid being charged. Remember to add your name to the permanent lunch list by calling Elizabeth if you have not already done so.

PROGRAM

The Guest Speaker at our October Club Day will be  Deby Goldenberg.  Deby is a certified yoga therapist, has a 3rd degree black belt and is a Tai Chi/Qi Gong instructor.

Deby will be guiding us in a short meditation and Qi Gong practice as well as demonstrate the saber form.

Qi Gong is  a mind-body-spirit practice that improves one's mental and physical health by integrating posture, movement, breathing technique, self-massage, sound, and focused intent.

There are thousands of Qi Gong styles, schools, traditions, forms, and lineages, each with practical applications and different theories about Qi ("subtle breath" or "vital energy") and Gong ("skill cultivated through steady practice").

BYOB FRIDAY

Date:    Friday, October 18
Time:   4:00 - 5:30 pm
Place:   Club Kitchen

"Bring something to sip and nibbles to share; it won't be the same if you're not there!"

And what better way to top off a crisp New England Autumn day than to gather in the WWC Kitchen for October BYOB Friday?

We'll track the progress of this year's fall foliage and favorite teams, trade travel tips, theatre reviews and restaurant recos and thread the needle on the Fall Clothing Sale's best buys. Whether you're sipping hot cider or tap water, a cool lager or a chilled Riesling; whether you're nibbling pretzels, kale chips, hummus, cheese or smoked fish;  this BYOB will be October's best  "fest."

Please "come as you are" and join us in the kitchen!
Just Bring Yourself Over Briefly, to say hello (or linger longer), anytime 4:00 to 5:30 pm, and be sure to Bring Your Own Beverage of choice and nibbles to share. Whether you are new to the WWC or a Member since "forever," this is an easy and entertaining way to meet fellow members, share your innovative autumn gourds centerpiece arrangement, compare notes on plans for trick-or-treaters, source ideas for your Halloween costume, ask Siri to keep an eye on Alexa, or simply launch a lovely weekend.
As always, we operate picnic/tailgate style, bringing our own simple set-ups and serving implements, then disappearing without footprints or fingerprints.

CANASTA

All players are welcome, regardless of skill level and experience.  You do not need to have your own Canasta cards and tray but, if you do, please bring them.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Date: Tuesday, October 22
Time: 10:00 am
Location: Living Room

  Hello WWC Ladies,

We had a great presentation by Elaine Daignault, Westport Human Services Director, during our September meeting. She told us what was happening in Westport followed by a question and answer period.

We hope that many of you will join us for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Sunday, October 20, at Sherwood Island State Park. Audrey Rabinowitz will once again be our team captain. Please see Audrey's information below for more insight. You can register online. Thank you, Audrey.

Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, October 22, at 10:00 am in the living room. The press release announcing our grant timeline and application are online. Hopefully we will have some grants to review.

Hope to see you on October 22.
Thank you.

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK - 2019

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and on Sunday, October 20,  as we have done for many years, members of the Westport Woman's Club will be walking as a team in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Sherwood Island State Park. This walk, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, helps to raise funds for breast cancer research and to raise awareness.
Please go to the website for Making Strides for Breast Cancer Walk, click on the Westport location, and register under the Westport Woman's Club team. Even if you are unable to participate in the walk, you can still make a donation. You may also register when you arrive at the walk.
Most of us do a walk that is slightly more than one mile - the scenery is beautiful - and the comradery with thousands of other walkers is heartwarming. Please join us - our group will meet at 9:30 am at the flag pole near the pavilion. Look for our white and pink sign with the Westport Woman's Club name on it.
Contact Audrey Rabinowitz at [email protected] or 203-227-6010 if you plan to walk (so that we can look for you) or you have any questions.
And, after the walk, our team continues our comradery at the Sherwood Diner for brunch!
Please remember to make an appointment for your mammogram.  Early detection is very important.

FOOD CLOSET

Good News
Staples High School held two food drives during their Back to School Nights. All in all, they contributed almost forty bags of groceries to the WWC Food Closet!

Bad News
We continue to lack certain items. We still need:
  • Chicken Helper
  • stuffing
  • gravy
  • canned hams (available at CVS or Rite Aid)
  • canned Chef BoyArdee
  • fruit juices (large plastic bottles)
  • canned fruit
  • pancake syrup
  • boxed mashed potatoes
  • boxed potato mixes
  • canned soup (NO chicken soup please)
  • mayonnaise
  • jello (boxed)
  • pudding (boxed)
  • boxed cereal (NO Cheerios please)
  • canned mixed vegetables
  • canned carrots
  • canned peas
We ask that you pick up a few of these food goods the next time you are doing your own grocery shopping. You may drop them off on October Club Day or deposit them anytime in the basket outside the office.

We appreciate the generosity of many of our members. After all, isn't that what the Westport Woman's Club is all about, giving back to our community?
