Message from Fremont Assessor Joe Herchenbach
Fremont Township property owners will soon be receiving their property assessment notices in the mail. It's important for taxpayers to read, understand and check this notice for accuracy as it contains important information about your property. The county has implemented a new system making this an important opportunity to make sure that your property information is factual.

The Fremont Township published date is September 19 th , and you only have 30 days from that date to appeal your assessment with Lake County.

If you feel your property is incorrectly assessed or if you find errors please contact the Fremont Township Assessor at 847 223-2846. Assessor, Joe Herchenbach encourages you to bring your evidence to the office before hiring an attorney to appeal. Many people pay an attorney and don't need to, as most issues can be addressed at the Fremont Township Assessor's Office.

To help taxpayers evaluate their property assessment notice, the Chief County Assessment Office is hosting tax assessment help center sessions. At the sessions, property owners can talk one-on-one with taxpayer advocates to understand the information on their assessment, see how to use the County's new web applications and learn about homestead exemptions, which can potentially provide tax relief.

Help Center Schedule

New for 2019 - Appeals Must Be Filed Electronically
Property owners can appeal their assessment on their own through the Lake County Board of Review. No attorney is required for a residential appeal. Appeals can be done in a few minutes by using the new SmartFile E-Filing Portal.
Prior to filing a formal appeal to the Board of Review, property owners should contact their  local township assessor's office  to discuss their concerns. There is a 30-day deadline from the date of publication to file an assessment appeal. The filing deadline for each property is listed on the assessment notice.
·      To appeal your assessment online, start by   creating an account through the Smartfile E-Filing portal .

Com Ed Scams
I have received calls regarding phone calls from people saying they are from Com Ed. Sometimes they are scams and sometimes other utility companies looking to get your business.

Com Ed will never call or come to your home or business to:
  • Sell you electricity
  • Ask for immediate payment with a prepaid cash card or cryptocurrency such as bitcoin
  • Ask for your account number or other personal information such as Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number
  • Ask to see your energy bill

ComEd never collects payments at kiosks that issue prepaid cash cards or cryptocurrency such as bitcoin.

How you can recognize a ComEd employee:
A ComEd field employee may knock on your door if we are unable to access our equipment, like the meter or pedestal transformer. You can identify a ComEd employee by:
  • Uniform - all ComEd field employees wear a uniform with the ComEd logo, including a shirt and safety ves
  • ID - employees will be wearing a ComEd ID badge with their name and ComEd listed
  • Vehicle - ComEd vehicles are white in color with a ComEd insignia on the car or truck
To confirm that someone is really a ComEd employee, call 1-800-EDISON-1 (1-800-334-7661) before engaging with the person.

We also ask customers to be wary about sharing the following information:
  • ComEd account number
  • Passwords to your accounts
  • Information on your last payment
  • Social Security number
  • A copy of your energy bill

If at any time you are uncomfortable, or you feel you are experiencing suspicious behavior, call 1-800-EDISON-1.

Report Phone Scams
If you believe you have been the target of a phone scam, ComEd urges you to contact the Illinois Attorney General’s office at 1-800-386-5438 (TTY 1-800-964-3013), or visit the  Illinois Attorney General's website  and select the “Protecting Consumers” link.
