September is Suicide Prevention Month

First, thank you for taking the time to read our very first monthly Cohen Clinic newsletter. Each month, we will share the latest updates on our activities, events and any relevant information for the veteran and military family community.

For September, which is Suicide Prevention Month, we want to take a moment to share with you a simple insight from our clinic. Usually, before veterans or military servicemen find themselves thinking about suicide, they are often experiencing a range of stresses that are treatable, such as depression, stress and anxiety, substance misuse, grief and loss, transitional challenges, and relationship or family difficulties. If you, or a member of your family, are experiencing any of these behavioral health challenges, we invite you to connect with our clinic and speak to one of our staff members.

On Monday, September 23, 2019 at 11:00am, Dr. Neal-Walden will be LIVE with Dr. Eve Taylor on Discover Your Why Veterans Radio Talk Forum on Radio One WYCB 1340 AM. On the show she will discuss suicide among the veteran and military communities, and why it’s important to seek help for mental health issues as early as possible. This month, we are highlighting Mallary Lass , Outreach Manager at The Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Easterseals.

What is your role at the Cohen Clinic?

My role as the Outreach Manager is to build community relations and collaborate with community partners. This not only brings awareness to our clinic but also allows us the opportunity to bring wellness activities and events to our veteran and military family clients and the community.

What is most rewarding about your job?

As an Air Force veteran I feel that I am still serving and helping the veteran community as the Outreach Manager. My job is incredibly rewarding because I feel that I am able to advocate for veterans and their families and provide resources and opportunities for them to live a meaningful life even after serving the military.

What is one thing that people may not know about you?

Something people may not know about me is my passion to travel. I have a bucket list to visit all 50 states by 2025 (7 to go!) and all 7 continents. Yes, even Antarctica by 2030 (5 to go!). I love learning about different cultures, histories, traditions and of course, trying new foods when traveling.
