United Against Bullying
The Rowland High School Senior Class stood together in a visual and united front against bullying by wearing orange on Friday, September 13. Across the country beginning in 2011, orange has been the symbolic color to stand up to bullying of all groups. Rowland High School seniors and faculty participated by wearing orange at the annual Senior BBQ to show 9th-11th graders that the senior class is united to begin a change on campus against bullying. ASB is selling orange shirts and more events are planned for October and for Unity Day - National Together Against Bullying Day on October 23. UNITED for kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Make it ORANGE and make it end!

Celebrate Shelyn Elementary's 50th!

Shelyn Elementary School will turn 50 and the community is invited to a 50 th Golden Anniversary Community Celebration this Thursday, September 19 from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. The school celebration will feature carnival games, face painting, a cake walk, photo booths, and student performances from each grade level, including the Shelyn Choir, Band, and Mandarin Dual Immersion students. Superintendent Dr. Julie Mitchell and the Board of Education will also be in attendance.

“It is such an honor to lead the celebration of our history,” said Shelyn Principal Sarah Opatkiewicz. “Our vibrant, community school has a long history of families who have attended throughout the decades. It is no surprise to see our parents and grandparents as former Shelyn Sharks volunteering daily! We are excited to invite our community for a fun, carnival celebration to show off how far we have come as we look forward to the next 50 years!”
Shelyn Elementary now offers a Mandarin Dual Language Immersion Program with Mandarin enrichment opportunities school-wide. Beginning in Kindergarten, students are taught how to read, write and communicate in two languages, learning 50% of their day in Chinese and 50% of their day in English.
Shelyn students review greeting vocabulary in Chinese and learn about moon cakes and the Asian Moon Festival Season by Shelyn Mandarin Teacher Kevin Chou.

The community can watch the innovative learning in action at Shelyn by following them on Twitter @ShelynSharks
