An Odd and Not That Great September -
So Far
Is anybody else still having trouble remembering what day it is? Beginning a month with a three-day weekend PLUS the probability of getting hit by a cat 5 hurricane, requiring evacuation, is making me long for October. Yes, I know. Hurricanes know all about October.

Hurricanes aside, this has been a particularly unsettling few weeks, with bad news about several friends in the arts. Two women, Vero Beach artist Marjorie Bohler and a frequent visiting author, Dorothea Benton Frank, passed away recently, and Aaron Collins, founder and music director of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra suffered a stroke just days after losing his father. I’ll have more information on all of these in this issue.

By next issue, if not before, I’ll have an update on rebuilding efforts in the Abacos from my old friend, Marjolein Scott, an artist who, with her husband, decided to leave the Abacos a few months ago because one more hurricane would probably do them in. Good timing. She’s still very much involved with artists and other residents in the islands.

As for me, I’m still catching up.

Appreciation in Abundance!

There’s a lot of appreciation being shown this weekend in Vero Beach. The Smithsonian magazine’s 15th annual Museum Day is Saturday, Sept. 21, and that same day McKee Botanical Garden is sharing the love in the form of Community Appreciation Day.

Your $1 ticket to McKee Saturday will include immersing yourself in the natural beauty of the 18-acre tropical hammock, counting water lilies, wandering through the Hall of the Giants and the Spanish Kitchen – the restored architectural treasures that add to the cultural significance of this celebrated landmark – and discover (or rediscover) why McKee is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and endorsed by the Garden Conservancy.
McKee Botanical Garden has been mentioned or featured in many popular national publications — Better Homes and Gardens, Coastal Living, House and Garden, Southern Living, The New York Times, and others. According to Executive Director Christine Hobart, “The Garden was named   one of ’22 Secret Gardens – Soothing Places of Surprise and Sanctuary in the U.S. and Canada’ by National Geographic Traveler and was recognized as one of the “'Top 10 Most Beautiful Gardens That Florida Has to Offer’ by  TripsToDiscover.com . In 2018, Coastal Living recognized McKee as ‘One of the Top Ten Most Romantic Places in Florida.’"

And it’s all yours for a single dollar Saturday — but that’s not all! For this one day only, visitors can take advantage of a special $10 discount for an annual membership to McKee. And oh, the perks! “As a member, you will enjoy free admission to both the Garden and the new Children’s Garden once it opens, special admission privileges at 320 Gardens throughout North America, invitations to exclusive member-only events, advance notice of special events, lectures and workshops, a 10 percent discount in the Garden Gift & Book Shop and Garden Café, and the Garden newsletter.” The discount is for new members only, though. And note that the Garden Café will not be open Saturday.
Every year, Smithsonian magazine offers everyone, not only subscribers, free admission to a network of participating museums round the country. This is the fifteenth year and it’s the Smithsonian Year of Music. There are a few rules to heed and steps to take but it’s easy enough. Actually, it’s fun. When you go to the website, you may pick any state to find out which museums and cultural institutions are available, so even if you end up going to one in your own neighborhood, that search can open your eyes to what fun lies beyond the horizon. Bottles? Southern Food and Beverage? New Orleans Jazz? Quilts? Mining? There’s a museum for that!
There’s pretty much only one catch. Do all your research and dreaming before clicking on Generate Ticket because once you do that, you’re committed. No backsies. You’ll be downloading a pass that gets you and a companion into the museum you’ve chosen. The date is Saturday September 21. The names that popped up near my zip code: Vero Beach Museum of Art ; Manatee Observation and Education Center; The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast ; Historical Society of Martin County ; and Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts .

Sophie Bentham-Wood, director of marketing and communications at Vero Beach Museum of Art, said docents will be available for tours at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. They’ll highlight art that features musical themes as well as interactive displays. “Families are invited to visit the Museum’s Art Zone where hands-on activities will include a variety of musical instruments,” she said. Treasure Coast Percussion has plans for a drum circle in Holmes Great Hall at 1 p.m. Drums and other instruments will be provided and there’s no charge.

Robin Makowski and the Florida Watercolor Society
Seven years ago, Robin Makowski was hired to be Art Studio Coordinator for the Elliott Museum. Her job description: Design and sell classes, hire instructors, and teach. Well, we all know how things can change. Makowski said, “As often happens with small not-for-profits, people leave and are not replaced, and their duties get distributed among the staff that knows how to do it. I had some graphic design experience, so I took that over. With it came marketing. I had already been doing the custom framing, mat cutting, designing, printing, and installing of labels for a number of projects here.”

She had experience in designing and installing shows, “so I got a title raise to Exhibitions Coordinator (and needed a wider name tag…). I have also curated several juried and in-house shows and took them from concept to passing out the awards.”

At some point in the near future, all those hats will be without Makowski’s head to hold them as she tries to her hand at retirement. And being an artist. This busy woman is an award-winning watercolorist, and will be in Orlando this week to accept her second place award in the Florida Watercolor Society’s 49th annual exhibition. “I was thrilled to have my latest craziness, Last Call , not only accepted for the exhibition by judge Carol Carter, but also awarded the Winslow Homer Award - Second Place! I'm way past thrilled!”
Following the Exhibition, the FWS Traveling Show will be held at the Visual Art Center in Punta Gorda, FL, November 11-30. The second stop will be at the Stirling Art Studios & Gallery, in Dunedin, Florida, December 3-28. The main show is in Orlando and the festivities are this week.

With her work schedule, Makowski has very little time to spend in her own studio. “I have only finished two paintings in the last year! One for my brother in the Happy Hour series, and Last Call which I started in December of 2018 and finished three days before the FWS June 8th entry deadline! I may have set a record on time on a painting. I plan on carving-out a lot more time to paint once I'm retired.”

Her life isn’t all about art, though. Makowski will begin retirement with a trip north. “I'm going to Chicago at the end of September to spend a couple of days with my bro and watch Da Bears kick some Minnesota butt! Never been to Soldier Field before so I'm really looking forward to that.”

Makowski is of two minds about her future. “It is with very mixed emotions that I announce my retirement from the Elliott where I have been for seven years. I should be retired sometime this month - I have not set a date yet. In the meantime, the current show at the Museum, Summer of '69 , is a hoot! Check it out if you're in the ‘hood!”

She said, “I’m really looking forward to being able to spend more time as an artist. It's what I am - not what I do, which I'll also have options on! Here's to whatever comes next!” But, Robin! What will we do without you?

Riverside Theatre is Gearing Up For a 46th Season!

The season begins in October with a musical journey through the 60’s with Beehive followed in January by the tap-happy, tuneful Thoroughly Modern Millie . A tribute to American playwright Neil Simon follows with his Pulitzer Prize-winning play Lost in Yonkers in February. Two very popular musical hits - the madcap La Cage aux Folles and the romantic thriller The Body Guard - conclude the season on the Stark Stage while two comedic plays fill the Waxlax Stage season - the uproarious The 39 Steps in January and very funny Bakersfield Mist in March.

Producing Artistictic Director/CEO Allen Cornell said, “Each season we strive to produce shows that will excite our audiences. The thought process behind show selections is centered on the goal of putting our own stamp on popular works that we believe our audience needs to see. With those thoughts in mind, we hope our patrons will be as excited as we are to see the shows that will comprise the 2019-2020 season.

Single tickets and season ticket packages are now available for the productions on the Stark and Waxlax Stages. For more information on prices and subscription options, call the Box Office at 772-231-6990 or online at www.riversidetheatre.com.
Aaron Collins On the Mend
If you check in on the Arts Blast Facebook pages, you might have read this post over the weekend:
“A few days after his father passed away in August, Maestro Aaron Collins, founder of the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, had a stroke ‘which caused heart damage and significant short term memory loss.’ He said it’s been a frustrating and depressing few weeks and the many cards and emails from friends and SCSO fans are tremendously appreciated. From Aaron: ‘That being said, I’m in recovery and am expecting to return to regular life sooner than later.’”

I found these photos from a Space Coast Symphony ad campaign of a few years ago and offer them as assurance that for anyone with the spirit and humor to throw himself into this kind of creativity, beating a stroke will be a slam dunk! Go, Aaron!

The Space Coast Symphony Orchestra season will go on as scheduled. The next concert is Big Band Fever, Oct. 5 at Scott Center for Perming Arts in Melbourne and Oct. 6 at VBHS Performing Arts Center. The following weekend, SCSO presents Frederic Voorn in a free chamber concert at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Indialantic and First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach.

Find the complete schedule and opportunities to get involved on the SCSO website .
Marjorie Bohler
Artist Marjorie Bohler, a 20-year resident of Vero Beach and long-time Artists Guild Gallery member, passed away suddenly in August from a stroke. Unexpected circumstances have made it temporarily impossible to access her estate, meaning family and friends have had to find a creative way to take care of her end-of-life expenses. A silent auction of her watercolor paintings at the Gallery beginning today, Sept. 17, and the sale of some of her art supplies, books, and note cards will help raise money, with all proceeds going toward funeral expenses.

Bohler held several positions in the Vero Beach Art Club and she was often a volunteer at club events. Rita Ziegler, a longtime friend, said “She was an active member and ardent supporter of the Vero Beach Art Club for 20 years including President for two terms. She also was president of the Gallery for three consecutive years.” Ziegler said Bohler had been an usher at Riverside Theatre for 10 years, “which she loved doing.” She added, “I don’t know what else to say. I miss her so much... my heart is breaking. She was such a classy woman. A real lady.”

Judy Burgarella, a former Artists Guild Gallery member, noted that Bohler’s husband had died a few months earlier, and said, “She will be missed by the Vero Beach art world.”

For more information about any of Marjorie Bohler’s art work, contact the Artist Guild Gallery at 772-299-1234 or artistsguildgallery@gmail.com, or visit the gallery at 1974 14th Ave.

Art Walk and Fish on a Fence in Fort Pierce

There will be a busy couple of days in Fort Pierce this week. Thursday is the Hook a Fish on the Fence party along Tickle Tummy Hill, and Friday is the monthly Art Walk, with Seriously Mixed Media having a Seriously Marvelous Sale. Every work of Art with an orange dot, is on sale—with prices seriously slashed.

Main Street Fort pierce says, "You’re invited! Join us for our September Art Walk. The one night of the month that our Art Community gets together for a night of Art, friends & fun. Be a part of our funky art scene." Download the map or pick up a copy at one of the participating galleries.
Triptych by Lisa Rapp -Rainbow Palms.
From Main Street Fort Pierce:

Join us September 19th at 5:30 p.m. as "Fish on the Fence" are hooked to their new home on North 2nd Street along Tickle Tummy Hill.Come hook a fish and grab a selfie in front of the new signage! The Taco Dive Downtown Ft. Pierce food truck will be on site with drinks and snacks available for purchase.

Fish on the Fence is a community grass roots program, spearheaded by Main Street Fort Pierce’s Design Committee and including participation by children’s summer campers from the Manatee Observation & Education Center and The Lindsay School Of The Arts.
During Fort Pierce’s monthly Art Walk held the 3rd Friday of every month, painting parties were held by downtown galleries and businesses — Fort Pierce Yacht Club, Seriously Mixed Media, Galleria of Pierce Harbor, Notions and Potions, Art Connection, Pelican Mosaics and Swig of Color. Employees of the City of Fort Piece jumped in creating 25 fish at Swig or Color during the August Art Walk. Friends of Main Street have hosted painting parties at their homes and community spaces. It is not an exaggeration to say 400+ different people painted these fish.

Fish have been cut from plywood and primed by students from the Port St. Lucie High School shop classes and trustees at the St. Lucie County Jail. All funds that were used to purchase supplies and all labor to create the fish has been donated, starting with a grant from Fort Pierce Utilities Authority. Paint and supplies have been donated by The Paint House and Ace Hardware. Local artists have donated their time — Anita Prentice, Chris Gunkel and Mary Myers and all the artists at Swig of Color have acted as artist mentors to some of the groups.

This is truly a community project created by Main Street Fort Pierce to fill a need to brighten up an empty block until the new King’s Landing development project takes shape on the old King Power Plant site.

Pulled from the news:
A Central Florida fourth grader who was bullied over his homemade University of Tennessee T-shirt has been offered a full ride to the school. Should he decide to attend UT and meet admission requirements, the university’s four-year scholarship covers his tuition and fees in fall 2028.

The university also announced that approximately 55,000 shirts based on a Florida boy’s now-viral makeshift Vol design have been ordered and some have arrived at the university.

The boy made headlines after his teacher, Laura Snyder posted a picture of his homemade Tennessee shirt to social media.

He wanted to represent the Vols on college colors day at his elementary school but didn’t have a UT shirt. The elementary student got creative and made his own UT logo on a white piece of paper and pinned it to an orange shirt.

From CNN:
Members of the University of Tennessee marching band got to be some of the first people to wear the wildly popular anti-bullying T-shirt inspired by a 4th-grade fan, who was teased for his homemade shirt.
The band, known as The Pride of the Southland, wore the shirts under their traditional uniforms on Saturday at the Volunteers' 45-0 win over The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
