Ohio START announces Cohort 3
PCSAO is excited to officially announce the third cohort of PCSAs to join the Ohio START program. This fall, 14 new counties across the state will kick off implementation of the program. Counties include Allen, Ashland, Auglaize, Cuyahoga, Harrison, Licking, Lucas, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Tuscarawas, Union, Wayne, and Williams. The addition of these counties brings the total number of counties implementing Ohio START to 46 counties, more than half the state. Welcome to Ohio START!
Ohio START welcomes new technical assistance consultants
In order to help grow the program and keep it on track for success, Ohio START has hired five new regional TA consultants who will provide ongoing technical assistance to assigned regions. The regional consultants are:
- Diana Hoover – Northwest
- Tim Beasley – Southwest
- Pam Meermans – Central
- Mindy Fehrman – Northeast
- Sheila Shafer – Southeast
START has also hired a Family Peer Mentor consultant, Jennifer Fow. Jennifer will work with counties to recruit and train FPMs and work closely with FPMs to build peer-to-peer engagement. Join us in welcoming them to the Ohio START team!
Ohio START Southern Consortium meets
On Sept. 10 the 17 counties in cohort 1 of Ohio START met for a day of learning. During the morning, attendees learned about the expansion of the program, discussed target population and family selection criteria, and heard from the evaluation team regarding data that has been collected thus far. The afternoon was spent in affinity groups, allowing attendees to learn from counterparts in other areas of the state.
HOPE update

As of Sept. 13, no children services-related rules are in Pre-Clearance or Clearance.

OHIO YAB schedules fall meeting
The Overcoming Hurdles in Ohio Youth Advisory Board is Ohio’s statewide voice of young people, ages 14-24, who have experienced foster care. Leadership skill development assists young people in and from foster care in preparing for their future, and increases the likelihood of positive outcomes post-emancipation. Youth advisory board involvement helps young people prepare for their future by developing self-advocacy and diplomacy skills, and moving from goal setting to implementation. It provides them with opportunities to build public speaking skills. It empowers today’s young people to become active agents in generating positive change for the next generation. The next meeting will take place Oct. 17, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Quest Business Center in Columbus. Registration is required;

Child Protection in the News
There's good news for Hamilton County kids in foster care. A program called Kids in School Rule! is helping them achieve educational stability and, in some cases, outperform their classmates in Cincinnati Public Schools.
As communities and states approach possible financial resolutions in legal actions over the opioid epidemic, many will seek to make a case for how their sector has been negatively impacted. Now is a good time for policymakers, including Gov. Mike DeWine, Attorney General Dave Yost and state legislative leaders to take a step back, examine the evidence and strategically consider allocating potential dollars where they can be most effective.
Each day, children in Bradley County become victims of abuse or witness crimes. Each weekday, the 10th Judicial District Children's Advocacy Center in Cleveland sees about three children who are believed to have been abused or witnessed a crime. Kelley Weber, assistant director of The H.O.P.E. Center Inc., which oversees the Children's Advocacy Center, recently shared its work with the Bradley Sunrise Rotary Club.
On Monday, State Rep. Rick Carfagna got a grassroots look at challenges facing case managers with Knox County Job & Family Services.
No agreement was reached Wednesday between Montgomery County Children Services union workers and the county following a closed-door settlement conference with an area judge. Judge Richard Skelton ordered Wednesday's talks in private after both sides had not reached an agreement during several public sessions.
