CAREER STUDY WEEK PROJECT

Dear Parents,

Next week, 7th and 8th graders will begin preparing for an important tradition at SBMS,
Career Study Week , which occurs in mid-November during student-parent-teacher conferences.

This program began in 1978 and is recognized by the Department of Labor. It provides students a positive, real-world work experience. It helps them build confidence by participating in the workplace where they will tackle unfamiliar tasks, and it gives students the opportunity to practice being responsible, friendly, polite, energetic, enthusiastic, and willing to learn. For 5 days, students work in a local business for a total of 25 hours instead of attending classes. The workplace is their classroom!

During English class on Monday, 7th grade students will be introduced to the program and will receive their Career Study Week Workbook as well as the Google Classroom Login.

On Tuesday during homeroom, 8th grade students will revisit their experiences from last year and consider how they can “ Dive in ” and choose a profession that speaks to a passion or interest. They will also receive their Career Study Week Workbook as well as the Google Classroom Login.

Please look over the Career Study Week Workbook with your student for an overview of the program as well as more specific details. Please find the timeline and take note of important dates. In the back of the workbook you will find a list of job suggestions. If you have a business or know of a business that would like to mentor an SBMS student, please let Kara know at kara@sbms.org . We are always looking to expand the opportunities!!

The lunchtime job lottery, where students will choose their jobs, will take place on
Monday, September 23 for 8th graders
Wednesday, September 25 for 7th graders

Note: Students should NOT contact employers before the lottery!

Finally, be sure to mark your calendars for the student work week :
Wednesday, November 20 through Tuesday, November 26.
PARKING LOT SAFETY

We know these first few weeks of school can be crazy as we settle into routines. Just a quick reminder that we have two loops of  traffic flow  in our parking lot. Please follow staff and teachers' guidance about where to go while in the parking lot, and please, do not drive while on the phone or texting. We also ask that no left-hand turns are made at the top of the driveway until after 3:45 pm on regular school days.

In the interest of keeping our students safe and also to provide an efficient transition picking up and dropping off at school, we ask all SBMS families to read the  Parking Lot Procedures and commit to providing a safe environment for our students. Thank you!
FROM THE DELI: FREE SNACK!
WHAT IS FREE SNACK? Click here to learn more!

DROP-OFF TIME
You can drop off the snacks in the morning at drop-off (preferred), or any time before snack break so that we have time to set it up outside:

Snack Times:
- Mon., Wed., Fri. 10:30am
- Tues. & Thurs. 11am
T YPE OF FOOD
Any food that you think is a good snack will work! Last year we had veggies & hummus, chips & salsa, fruit, bagels & cream cheese, finger sandwiches, Goldfish crackers, popcorn, muffins, etc.

PORTIONS
Don't stress about trying to feed all 160 students, just do your best to provide a good amount of snack items. The deli will handle portioning the snacks as well! (see photos)
DO I NEED TO SERVE? Nope, the volunteers take care of that, and if you bring any bowls/containers, they can be returned to you at the end of the day clean.

DELI VOLUNTEERS
If you are interested in participating in all things fun and delicious, check out the Deli Volunteers Sign Up!
FROM THE PARENT ASSOCIATION

School is off to an amazing start! We invite you to get involved! There are many opportunities to volunteer... from helping in the deli, cleaning a school van, bringing meals to a family in need, driving students to/from sporting events, and much more. Plus, it’s an opportunity to meet other parents and get to know the school and teachers. We have several PA positions still available: Secretary, Songfest Chair, Rites of Passage Chair, and 2 Staff Appreciation Chair positions. If you are interested and would like to learn more about these positions or other volunteer opportunities, please contact me at 908-489-8794 or  debbiepopovich@hotmail.com.

A major goal of the Parent Association is to foster relationships between parents . It takes a village, and we want our village to be strong! Please join the Parent Association for some socializing in the days ahead:

  • The first PA meeting is: Tuesday, September 17, 8:45am social, 9-10am meeting, in the Lotus Theater. Please join us at 8:45am for tea and coffee and at 9am to hear from several of our faculty and staff about what’s in store for our kids this year.
  • Friday, September 13, 8:30am. Parents of 6th and 7th graders are invited to join us for coffee & treats at Goleta Beach during drop-off at the Pedal and Picnic event.

Reminder…  Keep the SBMS parking lot a calm, stress-free zone. Stay off your phone, bring some extra patience, and follow the directions of staff who are there to keep our kids safe!

Thank you so much for your cooperation!
