Fun Fact:
Celebrating "Chilenidad" (Chilean-ness)
Dancing the cueca.

During the month of September Chile celebrates its Independence Day (Sept. 18, 1810) with many special activities, foods, dances and vacation days! Throughout the country there are many opportunities to go to a FONDA. This is like a county fair with food and beverages to purchase, typical games for children to play, and presentations made by folk music and dance groups. Originally, the fonda included a rodeo, but today there are choreographed demonstrations of different breeds of horses. Last year we even saw a brass band mounted on horseback! Many people wear traditional "huaso", or cowboy, outfits. The fonda is a fun place for families to celebrate their "Chilenidad"!

Prayers & Praise
* We thank God for
Carlos and Jorge, two Chilean men who were recently confirmed in their faith! Pray for Jofre, Naylu, Cesar, Carolina, and Marcos (all Venezuelans) who have begun the adult instruction process.

* Praise God for our new property! Pray that the Lord would bless our efforts to transform it into a house of Worship and Mercy in Santiago.

* P ray for MUSICIANS! An important part of transferring leadership in the church is to have capable musicians who can lead the congregation in worship and praise. Pray for Liisa also as she works to nurture and train new musicians.

* Praise God for highly successful GLO mission conferences in that were held in Kenya and Nigeria in June and July! Pray that God would raise up Lutheran missionaries from those nations.

* Pray for our daughter, Nika, as she begins her career as a chiropractor.  She still has a couple hurdles (board exams) to go, so let's pray her through all of her final tests.

* Pray for our project to send medicine to Venezuela. Recently, the LCMS published news about this project without mentioning Global Lutheran Outreach or us, causing some confusion. There is only one project to send medicine to Venezuela from Chile, and that is the one we are operating.

Pray that God would continue to use
Global Lutheran Outreach to share the Hope we have in the Risen Christ all around the world
through the work of our 34 missionaries!

Pray for Adrianny Ventura. She is the oldest daughter of our Venezuelan family serving as GLO missionaries in Constitucion, Chile. We ask God to give her relief and, if it's his will, heal her of her scleroderma, a debilitating hardening of the skin.

When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.
(Joshua 6:5)
Many are familiar with the Biblical account of the fall of Jericho. What a crazy way to conquer a city! March around it seven times, blast on the trumpets, shout at the top of your lungs, and watch the walls fall down! It's a great story that shows the power of God. But more than that, it shows us that God doesn't do things the way they are "supposed" to be done. We tend to go at the "walls" in our lives with sledgehammers - or at least, I do. I pound away at the wall, wondering why it doesn't fall. Meanwhile, God is saying, "are you done pounding yet?" Once I let go and let God, he gets things done His way. With a shout.
Church Property Update
We apologize for the lengthy delay since our last newsletter. We know that many of you, our mission partners, are wondering how things are working out in the new location, the "Lions Club property"! Well... they aren't. When Jim went to sign the rental contract, he had the unpleasant surprise of finding that a lot of the details which had previously been agreed upon were not in the contract, and other details that he could not agree to were in it! He felt that he could not sign in good conscience, and walked away from the deal.
We then went to "Plan B", but after a month of negotiations, the owner decided that she did not want to rent the house and so that deal fell through. "Plan C" also did not work out. Since then, it has been a whirlwind of property-hunting. Jim ended up making four offers on four separate properties all at the same time, and they were all accepted! So we held a congregational meeting to put them in order of preference. Just a few days ago, on Friday the 13 th, we signed on our new church property! We will be telling you all about it in our next newsletter! Praise God!

Visitors and Volunteers!
We are thankful that 4 people responded to our plea for an "emergency volunteer team"! However, with the failure of the Lion's Club property deal (see previous article), we had to ask the volunteers to cancel or postpone their trip. That was a BIG disappointment for us.
Still, we have had some volunteers to Chile, just not the way we envisioned. The first group arrived in July.  Pastor Ted and his congregation in Circle Pines, Minnesota have been supporting the
(L-R) Pastor Omar, Jim, volunteers Linda and Richard, pastor Ted
After School Program efforts of GLO missionary Rev. Adrian Ventura in Constitucion. We accompanied this group of 3 volunteers to the mission site 5 hours south of Santiago.  They were busy building a playhouse, a green house and sprucing up the property.  Activities also included an English workshop and a one-day VBS program.
Jim and Janine painting
In August our next volunteers were Jim's sister, Janine, and her husband, Don. Originally, they offered to help us "move to our new location".  Well, our plans changed but they still made themselves available to do whatever... everything from yard work, to painting, to English classes!  Oh yes, we did some sight-seeing too! Above all, we were encouraged by their visit.

Meet our new vicar, Marcelo Rivas!
The Lutheran mission is going to be blessed by the presence of its first vicar Marcelo, his wife Vania and their two daughters Amanda (7) and Angela (18 months) this year.  Marcelo has studied in both the Argentine and Dominican Republic seminaries and is ready to  do his vicarage (pastoral internship). Originally from the city of Talca in Chile, Marcelo will add a great "Chilean touch" to the mission.  He was installed 1 month ago and has already started leading worship and preaching. On Friday he organized the kick-off of our Young Adult Group, with 13 young adults in attendance! We cooked hamburgers on the grill, sang, had a devotion and got to know one another. We look forward to a wonderful year working with Marcelo and family!
GLObal Growth!
One of Jim's challenges is to find time to support the needs of our GLO missionaries and projects,  while serving as pastor and missionary in Chile! We are thankful for many new opportunities and ask you to to pray as we help to send missionaries "from everywhere to everywhere"!
Rev. Amos and Evelyn Otula, GLO missionaries from Kenya to Uganda.

Specifically, we have a new missionary family, the Otulas, who are preparing to go from Kenya to Uganda. Pray for these efforts as we guide and support the national Lutheran church of Kenya in this endeavor.
Aaron and Yenifer Farrow.

Pray for missionary Aaron Farrow and his wife, Yenifer, as they serve in Chile. The document process has been tricky for his wife who is from the Dominican Republic. Currently,  they are seeking funds to continue working in Valparaiso, Chile.
Family update: Meet Dr. Tino!
Yes, Nika's dream has finally come true! On August 23, she graduated from Logan University as a Doctor of Chiropractic. We had a sizable group gather in St. Louis for this special day. The last 4 years have been full of hard work and dedication, but now she is ready to work as a chiropractor. We pray that God will guide her as she looks for opportunities to practice her profession!

We praise God for each of you,  our "mission partners". In addition to providing our living expenses, your financial contributions have also been supporting our growing immigrant ministry in Santiago! A surprise special gift this month boosted our support level into healthier territory - We praise God for blessing us through you!
