Oculus is an e-newsletter that is distributed by the OU Gibbs College of Architecture (GCA) during the fall and spring semesters. It features news about student, faculty, staff and alumni accomplishments, as well as events that may be of interest to our community. Note that there is a weekly version of the newsletter for a local audience, and a monthly version for a broader audience. OU Alumnus and Student Selected as Million Dollar Pool Challenge Winner and Finalist

Gibbs College of Architecture student Anuhya Konda and 2013 Landscape Architecture  alumnus Alex Tyler have been selected as finalists of the Million Dollar Pool Challenge ! Konda, a graduate student studying Landscape Architecture, was the only student finalist, while Tyler was selected as the first place winner of the competition! Tyler was the runner up in last year's competition .

Interior Design Professor Publishes Essays in "Culture of Creation"

Dr. Tiziana Proietti , an assistant professor in the divisions of Interior Design and Architecture, was recently published in award-winning designer Satyendra PakhalĂ© 's book,  Culture of Creation The book features critical essays by leading design thinkers and practitioners, both in and outside of the 'design world,' and took more than two years to complete.

Regional + City Planning Professor Speaks at Food Security Symposium

Dr. Bryce Lowery, an assistant professor in the division of Regional + City Planning, recently spoke at a symposium highlighting food security issues in northeast Oklahoma City.
The Urban Land Institute of Oklahoma brought Oklahoma City residents, policymakers and experts together to "discuss potential ways to solve the food access crisis in northeast OKC," according to an article that highlighted the symposium.

IQC and Volunteers Construct Capitol Hill Pop-Up Plaza

The Institute for Quality Communities  (IQC) has been working with Oklahoma City's Capitol Hill commercial district, Calle Dos Cinco, to build a plaza for the community. This past summer, the IQC hosted a community workshop  to hear from community members and create concepts for a plaza that would meet their wants and needs. After months of designing and planning, community volunteers worked with the IQC to construct a Pop-Up Plaza for community members to experience and evaluate before moving toward a permanent solution.

Regional + City Planning Professor Publishes Research in City & Community Journal

Assistant professor of Regional + City Planning Dr. C. Aujean Lee's article, "Impacts of Multiscale Racial Concentration on Neighborhood Foreclosure Risk in Immigrant Gateway Metropolitan Areas" was recently published in the journal,  City & Community With Dr. Andrew Greenlee, Dr. Lee found that race and nativity played a major role in mediating foreclosure risk across immigrant gateways.

Maple Ridge Residents Excited by Urban Design Students' Project

Urban Design Studio students presented data and findings from their Great Streets project for Maple Ridge during the neighborhood's annual holiday party.
More than 100 residents visited with the students to provide feedback. Dozens signed up to work with the students during the project's design phase next spring. 

Gibbs College Students Present Final Projects to OKC Nonprofit ReMerge

Students across the Gibbs College of Architecture enrolled in Marjorie Callahan's "Rethinking Women's Prisons " course presented their final projects to ReMerge  officials and participants of the program on Dec. 12 at the organization's brand new location in Oklahoma City.  ReMerge is an Oklahoma City-based nonprofit and a "comprehensive female diversion program designed to transform pregnant women and mothers facing incarceration into productive citizens."

Q&A With Environmental Design Alumnus Sam Crabtree

We recently caught up with Environmental Design graduate Sam Crabtree to discuss how his time at the Gibbs College of Architecture prepared him for his career. Sam is currently working for L5 Construction in Oklahoma City as a project manager. Read on to learn more about his role as a project manager and what he loves about his job.

Urban Design Professor Celebrates Retirement

Professor Jay Chandler, J.D., an adjunct member of the Graduate Faculty of the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa since 1990, is now celebrating retirement after teaching his last class on December 9, 2019, with students from the OU Urban Design Studio

FREE LUNCH! Board of Governors Scholarship Information Session

Join us on Wednesday, January 15th, at 12:30 p.m., in the Gould Hall Buskuhl Gallery for the Board of Governors Path to Licensure Scholarship presentation. The presentation will outline the Oklahoma City Community Foundation (OCCF) + Board of Governors scholarship opportunities. These $3,000+ scholarships are available to Architecture, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture students. Multiple students are selected each year. Lunch is provided.

Renegades: Bruce Goff and the American School of Architecture  Exhibition Opens at Fred Jones on January 24

The exhibition Renegades: Bruce Goff and the American School of Architecture  tells the story of this exciting period in architectural history by featuring selections from the American School  Archive, as well as virtual tours of several residences designed by Bruce Goff and digitally rendered by Skyline Ink of Oklahoma City. The exhibition opens Friday, Jan. 24.

Award-Winning Scholar Beatriz Colomina to Lecture at Gibbs College

Beatriz Colomina, H oward Crosby Butler Professor of the History of Architecture at Princeton University, is coming to speak at GCA next week. Colomina is an internationally renowned, award-winning author and architectural historian whose work focuses on today's questions of how architecture, art, technology, sexuality and media fit together. Colomina will lecture at GCA on Friday, January 24th, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., in Gould Hall Buskuhl Gallery, room 130.

Charles W. Graham Travel Study Dinner Benefit Tickets On Sale Now

The Charles W. Graham Travel Study Benefit Dinner will be held on February 7, 2020, from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. at the Petroleum Club in Oklahoma City. It will feature a multi-course meal with fine wine pairings. Individual tickets are $125 each. All proceeds support student travel study scholarships and opportunities.

"Gardens of Knowledge and Delight" to be offered in Arezzo, Italy

Walk the historic botanical gardens of Italy, the foundations of natural history and science, with biogeographer Bruce Hoagland. Experience splendid Renaissance villa gardens and Italian cities with landscape architect Bret Betnar. Learn the history and secrets behind the beloved places whose beauty, plant collections, structure, and style continue to inspire scientists and artists.
